What I Believe

Posted on January 9th, 2005 by catalyst into the Uncategorized category

It has to come to my attention that many members of City Bible Church are “disgusted” with me. They do not understand my complaints, and they despise my method. And thus they have decided, “I am not walking with the Lord.” (Whatever that means)

Fair enough. I did start a blog making fun of their church. Judgment is to be expected.

But before anyone else judges me, allow me to share what I truly believe. Because despite my numerous faults, I still believe I am living a Christ-like life.

First, understand that because I grew up in a Christian home, I have read just about every verse in the Bible.

And while reading the Bible, I have become to realize that the Bible is a big book with a lot of verses. And there is a Bible verse to justify almost every action.

I found this confusing and thus started looking for a core message from the Bible; the essence of the Bible. How do I summarize the Bible in one verse?

Thankfully, someone asked Christ that same question. In the Book of Mark, a man approached Jesus and asked him to sum up all the laws in the Bible.

Jesus responded with simply, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Interestingly, in the Book of Romans, when the Apostle Paul was asked the same question, he only responded with, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Paul recognized that it is easy to say you love God. However, it is a lot more difficult to take that love and show it to others. The real act of loving God is showing compassion and grace to others. (I am pretty sure Paul is also a former member of City Bible Church).

Anyway, that is my creed.

In living my life, I am constantly trying to show compassion to others. So City Bible is free to judge me and my lifestyle. It is okay. I know what I believe.

“Greater Love hath no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”-John 15:13.

My favorite verse is, “For I say to every man to whose ears have come the words of this prophet’s book, if any man makes an addition to them, God will put on him the punishments which are in this book [unless those additions cause CBC, my beloved, to profit, in which case I’ll overlook any such additions to Scripture]”
    Damazio 22:18

So, considering that you claim to be living a “Christ like life”, what you’re saying is that you beleive this is how Jesus Christ would handle His issues with the church. He would post blog comments using sarcasm, gossip, slander, character assasination and lies. All in all, it doesn’t seem very Christ-like to me.

Well, I lost that bet. I bet this comment would come before noon.

Right, so of course the obvious question, is what is compassionate about this blog. And I’ve got to be honest, I’m not sure this blog is compassionate.

All I know is that every day for the last month I have received an email from a former CBC member commending me for what I’m writing. This blog is a refuge for every ex-CBC member who felt they were alone. Well, they’re not.

And I said it before but I’ll say it again. When Christ was angry with the Church he went into the Temple and overturned tables. He got violent. Well, that would get me arrested. So, instead I’m sitting here typing what I feel. This blog should probably labled: “Turning Over Tables”

Finally, let me say this again, if it was just me who felt this way, I would have killed this blog several weeks ago. But guess what its not just me or my brothers. There are thousands of people are fed up with CBC’s teaching.

Yes… this is the time in a persons life when we decide if we believe in man’s teaching or if we desire to follow God (Christs’ teachings). If the Lord puts a burden on your heart to reach out to others who have been hurt deeply by CBC, by all means you are respected and appreciated. This blog, in my opinion, is a healing forum.
My life has much more purpose lately. I read “Blue Like Jazz” (Donald Miller) and found this group of wonderful people. I can feel Christ watching over my life and its wonderful to see Him leading young people to speak they’re mind even if it means those people loosing clout with the CBC aristocracy.

Do you think that perhaps your “burden” to reach out to all the other town criers might actually be doing more harm than good? Nothing in your sarcasm hints at forgiveness or mercy or grace or longsuffering or patience or even love. You’re reinforcing things you probably ought not. But it looks like your blog is losing steam anyway.

Town criers stop crying when the town stops erring! I don’t think it matters what the blog says, but you only reinforce the importance of its existence when you can, in good conscience, defend the greed of your church.

How could this blog possibly do more harm than a church who holds it’s congregation captive with the law and preaches nothing about grace and forgiveness!

Ever thought about becoming a Catholic? On behalf of my Catholic community I invite you! Check out the Catechism of the Catholic Church or see if you can find EWTN on your cable provider. You will not be dissapointed.

I’ve occasionally read this blog since it was publicized in Willamette Week. I only visited CBC a couple of times during my “holy roller” days in the early 90s. However, I can assure you that many churches have similar problems as CBC. It is unfortunate that churches (particularly those on fundamentalist end of the theological spectrum) automatically become defensive and dismissive of any criticism.

As a former closeted gay, fundamentalist Christian who is now an openly gay, liberal Christian, I relate to your stated creed. Loving God and being sincerely compassionate to others is what Jesus’ message was all about. Sincerely loving others in a Godly, Christ-like way is far more challenging than dogmatically declaring allegience to a popular creed.

Thank you for sharing your CBC experience and your new creed.

Wow! It’s amazing how the power of technology now enables a protester to state their complaints from the comfort of their own home in complete anonymity. This way the voice of slander and character assassination never needs to show it’s cowardly face.

No matter what organization a leader may associate with, he will always expect a certain amount of criticism. However, you Morton Boys, and Gal, have taken criticism to a whole new level. You need to understand, the nature in which these pages are being written might sting the leadership, but the real pain will be felt by people that you have shown no regard for by the way you have handled your opinions. Please let me explain:

You speak of this web site as “revealing the truth about City Bible Church.” Well, an important thing about truth is getting your facts straight. Obviously you are hyper sensitive to the prospect of tithing and giving. So much so, that the very words become an opportunity to gain inebriation rather than learning. However, you obviously have nothing left to learn, which is evident by your ability to take words, statements and scriptures out of context in order to prove your shallow minded points. So let’s leave that alone for the moment and actually take some time to explore the facts.

Here are the types of people and ministries that your “truthful” revelations will actually hurt:

Let’s begin by addressing your comments about how City Business Church ignores the poor in order to line the pockets of the leadership. Let’s begin with the food house ministry. Due to the tireless efforts of the team that gathers and organizes this ministry, more food is distributed to the poor and needy on a monthly basis than the Portland organization, Meals on Wheels, does in an entire year. This doesn’t even include the thousands of dollars that are put towards rent, mortgage and utility payments for those who are in financial crisis. Nor does it include the extra wave of food distribution during the holiday season. 500 boxes were distributed on Thanksgiving alone. Also, over 500 families, who otherwise wouldn’t, will receive gifts for Christmas. Even as I write, dozens of volunteers are wrapping those gifts to make it as special as possible for the children involved. I’m sure that your comments will make them feel all warm and cozy about their efforts.

Your work on the Double Elder article was amazing. Actually, what’s so amazing is that you have no clue what you’re talking about. Yes, there is $2.7 remaining on the East campus and yes there is now $4.5 owing on the West campus. However, in your eagerness to paint a picture of deception, you missed the part where the West campus congregation actually covers the cost for the West campus. That’s right, other than the original start-up funds, it’s actually self-sustaining without subsidy from the East. Meanwhile, the overall budget has remained on task. This person you refer to as “Double Elder” and “spy” should actually be commended for his dedication towards being a good steward over that which the church body has charged him with. Again, I’m sure that your kind words have all but made up for his sleepless nights, time away from his family and the pressure to be accountable for every penny. This also makes me wonder how his family would feel if they were to read your words. Hmmm, very considerate of you.

You like to crunch numbers on the conferences to paint a picture of lucrative and shady business schemes. Does it matter to you that much of the income is used to send well over 150 young people to summer camp every year? Probably not, considering that you would only view that as hype that will vanish after two weeks.

Take into consideration the hundreds of small group leaders that continually open their homes to meet, strengthen and build relationships. They do this because they believe that everyone should have people in their lives for the good times and the bad. They believe that no one should be alone. Does it matter to you that your words will hurt them?

How about your pastor? Does your web site have his best interest at heart? Is this the type of effort that he would endorse and consider being a worthy investment of your time and energy? Would it be possible that he would feel it doesn’t represent him or the spirit in which he would lead the church? Is he a man who would value his fellow laborers? Or would he sit by and watch as people in his congregation attack other parts of the body, instead of working out their differences peacefully, biblically and yes - respectfully? Have you considered this?

You mention how Pastor Jack Louman was actually helpful to you during a difficult time of bitterness and frustration in your life. Well I’m sure that he feels your appreciation when you trash everything and everyone that he has poured his life into.

The point is that you are so busy looking for flaws, deception and acts of malicious intent that you have no eye to see the good. Even if I were to come to Pastor Frank Damazio’s defense, which he doesn’t need, it would be wasted because you have already made up your mind. So much so that you are able to callously lie about the words, intent and spirit in which he preaches and teaches. I.e. Damazio 3:16.

Here’s one last thought. Considering you have shown such tremendous concern for the poor and needy, why not publish how the rest of us can get involved with your humanitarian effort. However, in the chance that this doesn’t exist, how about if you cut the hypocrisy and help distribute some food boxes. After all, the work is plenty but the laborers are few. It would seem, however, that the critics are not. Besides, the being that you affectionately refer to as “Satan Claus” must be laughing all the way to the bank. Considering you have taken his place and are doing his job as the accuser of the brethren. With Christians like you, who needs him?

Besi

I am a PBC graduate who has just come across this blog. God has answered my prayers!!! Kudos. I have written many a letter and then thrown them away for fear of acting in the “wrong spirit.” I am glad that someone, (quite a few of you it seems) has addressed these issues. I look foward to reading more. I don’t believe that any enemy of the church could have possibly done more damage to me and my family than City Bible has. And I think that pisses God off.
