The Return of Malachi

I am posting an old fovorite for those of you new to this site. If you haven’t taken the time to read this yet, please enjoy.

The Day I Robbed God
Back in early 2001 times were tough. This particular day spirits were exceptionally low. I had a crappy job, I was depressed, it was Monday and I couldn’t even find my Bible.

My wife and I were financially strapped. I was earning very little and the stress was taking its toll. Despite my situation, I was a tither to the core. Come hell or high-water that 10% found its way into the offering basket. The magic 10%, my church believed in it, my pastor preached it and I put it into practice. I also went the occasional extra mile with my open-hearted gifts to missions. I won’t even take blogging space to mention my generous gift of $200 that I made to faith harvest that year.

Due to lack of finances I couldn’t afford to take my wife out and my 2 credit cards were maxed out. Something had to be done. So on that life-changing Monday after years of faithful tithing I abandoned all good conscience and took the plunge. We decided to lower our monthly giving to the church down to a measly 3%. That’s right folks, a whopping 3%. That’s a full 7 less than 10.

Finally the fateful Sunday arrived. I walked through the doors to the sanctuary with my head held low; feeling the kind of shame only a non-tither could feel. With fear and trembling I dropped the check into the offering bucket and tried not listen to the passionate requests from the pulpit for more money. I was well steeped in the doctrine of tithe, and was well aware of the consequences of forsaking such important New Testament…uuuh I mean Old Testament teaching. Here’s mine and yours favorite Bible verse:

“Mal 3:8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 *You are cursed with a curse…*”

And boy did I ever know this teaching. You better obey this one or you will have robbed God and unfortunately find yourself under Malachi’s curse. It was well known to all that this sneaky curse had leaped the pages of the Old Testament, made its way right passed Christ, the cross, the new covenant and found itself a staple teaching in the American Mega-Church. Damn curse, it’s unstoppable!

And so I awaited my punishment. For a month I slept with one eye open. I knew it was coming, I just didn’t know when and how. I waited and waited . . .and waited.

About a month later at about 3am my wife and I lay peacefully asleep in bed. Suddenly an intensely loud crash filled the air. I sat straight up in bed, eyes wide open, convinced that judgment had finally caught up with me. THE CURSE OF MALACHI WAS UPON ME AND MY HOUSEHOLD . . . AAAAAAAAAARGH!!

But, my fellow bloggers do not be afraid, neither be thou dismayed, it turned out to be a false alarm. Some intoxicated driver had lost control of his car and ended up hitting the side of our apartment. No one was hurt.

In time, despite the occasional nightmare of God showing up demanding back payment plus interest, I felt pretty good. I got a better job and paid down the credit card debt. These days I even give pretty darn close to 10%.

Not sure what this story really proves, but it is interesting to note that the only change that giving only 3% had on me was that I had 7% more to spend on bills. Funny how that works.

They Will Be Mocked

Disclaimer:
The following post is 100% pure sarcasm and it contains absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. If sarcastic humor offends you, please stop reading now.

I have decided to make it a little easier for us all. Instead of spending hours in church learning the exact same thing week after week, I will now publish the 5 simple steps to receive blessings from God. (I may follow up with the book titled “5 Simples Steps to Receive Blessings from God”)

1. When your church begins to announce the offering start to pray for things that you need (want).
2. As you drop your tithe into the bucket say out loud “Lord in return for my gift I expect to receive _______” (fill in the blank with the things you need [want])
3. After dropping your tithe into the bucket take your hands and form a funnel* above your head. This way it will be easier for God to pour out his blessing on your life.
4. Once the blessing is confirmed immediately start your clap offering.
5. Repeat

*Have you ever had someone ask you to make a funnel above your head to receive blessings from God? I have, but I don’t get it. Is God getting old? Does he have a case of the shakes? He really needs a funnel? Here is how I see this going:

God: I will now pour out my blessings on Johnpaul
JP: Thanks God, I’ll help out by making a funnel with my hands.
God: Good idea son. Here we go. Whoops, looks like I poured a bit too much.
JP: Come on God, now I’ve got blessing all over my leg; didn’t you see the funnel. Next time I’m asking for the Holy Ghost.

Is the funnel really necessary? I think I am going to take drift wood and spell the word BLESSING in case God happens to fly by my house. That way He will know exactly where to drop off that check for “millions maybe even billions of dollars”.

Prayer, Anyone?

I just found this article on prayer titled “I can’t pray for you people”. It offers a slightly different perspective which is nice, and I ran it through the bitterness scale and it rated a 2.4. That’s not very bitter.

Here’s a taste:

I need you people to stop sending me prayer requests via email. I mean it… just stop. In fact, I want you to stop sending them to just about everyone else, too. I know that you care about these people… these needs you send my way. And you want others to know, to care, to pray. You want to feel a sense of connection, of community with a larger group of people, people who may, even just for a moment, feel some of the same concern you are feeling. But the truth is, there is a cost to what you are doing.

Clap,clap, clap, clap

Quick question, what do you get for a clap offering?

Suppose you are very generous and stop several times a day and give God a clap offering, how much blessing does that earn you? Suppose your first 10 claps at the end of a great play are given to God and the remaining 90 go to the actors, does that count as tithe? If so how many claps does it take to earn $1 worth of blessing? Are there special Clap Harvest offerings or how about Acts 2 clapping?

These are the questions we need to answers to. I think I’ll start a Clapping Cell Group.

The Jesus Sweepstakes

This is a quote by Pastor Rick Snow taken from his Jan 22nd sermon at CBC titled The Generosity Factor

“He (God) is literally looking, in the American Church especially, for people He can trust with thousands, millions, maybe even billions of dollars over the course of your lifetime”

I know this seems obvious so I probably don’t need to write anything, but come on; is this guy for real?

So let’s see…

God is out searching the nation for one lucky tither, and on this Superbowl Sunday he is going to show up on someone’s doorstep and surprise them with a check for $10,000.
This generous soul will then have the opportunity to turn that $10,000 into 1 million or possibly 1 billion dollars.

After receiving that check he will be asked these three questions.

1. How do you live a life that honors God?
2. What 3 things does God look for in people that He blesses?
3. What is a Triple Dog Dare?

If he gets them all right then that check will turn into 1 million dollars. (hint: The answer to every question is – Give to the church)

What he doesn’t know is that if he takes that million dollar check and signs it over to City Bible Church within 5 minutes of receiving it than he will be given 1 billion dollars.

Alright, alright, alright,

When did the ultimate goal of Christianity become parallel with the American Dream?

In listening to this sermon I was amazed with the double message. Rick has great things to say about generosity. He is absolutely right that God will bless those who give, but his message is all about what it takes to get rich. What happened to Jesus, the Cross, and Salvation.

1 Tim. 6:9 (NIV)
People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.

1 Tim. 6:17-18 (NIV)
It’s clear that the Bible is calling us to be generous, but it doesn’t promise riches in return. God may bless you with “millions maybe even billions of dollars”, but he may also bless you with health, joy, or possibly seven children.

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. [18] Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

Is it not enough that God has pulled us from the grasp of hell? He now has to give us the keys to His BMW?

I thank God for His gift of The Cross. Salvation is my reward.

Holy Cow, It’s the BIBLE!

Eccles. 5:10-11 (NIV)
Whoever loves money never has money enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.
This too is meaningless.
(Church Gal would like to know what people do with that scripture? No picking and choosing now.)

[11] As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owner
except to feast his eyes on them?

Isaiah 52:3 (NIV)
For this is what the Lord says:

"You were sold for nothing,
and without money you will be redeemed."

Acts 8:20-21 (NIV)
Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! [21] You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.

Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

"Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you."

Matthew 19:24 (NIV)
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Disclaimer:
Having lots of money is not a sin, in my opinion. I like to compare money with alcohol; they both are a lot of fun to have, but if you let them control you they can destroy your life.

And now I have a post

My brother emailed me today trying to get me to post something. I responded saying I didn’t want this blog to feel like a job, and I was quite comfortable going a day without posting anything.

To which he emailed back:

Where has the fire gone? This is no job, this is a mission, a call from God.

The Lord would say to you this day,

“For a time will come-a, when you will be faced with a great calling-a. Your burden will be heavy-a and time will be short-a. I will be your rock-a, I will create a hedge of protection around you-a. Step into the river-a, wade into the river-a, take off your clothes and do a cannonball into the river-a.”

Thus sayeth the Lord.

Blue Like Jazz

Our boy Zach Dundas from the Willamette Week has done it again.

In the latest addition of the paper there is a front page article on Donald Miller, a Christian writer from Portland who is gaining national prominence.

I have never met Mr. Miller, but he seems like a fascinating guy, and he seems like the new breed of Christian that is slowly taking over today’s modern church.

He has an excellent quote in his new book Blue Like Jazz, where he describes why he quit his job as a youth minister at a suburban church.

He explains, “It was like going to church at the Gap.”

Ahh, so true… so true… some of you so-called radicals at City Bible should read this quote again and then take a look in the mirror.

Anyway, his book sounds interesting and I plan on buying it tomorrow.

Lost Scriptures – Part 1

I was doing my nightly Bible study and reading up on the beatitudes. I carefully went through each one. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, Blessed are those who mourn, Blessed are the meek…

I got to the last Beatitude "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness" and became confused. I frantically turned the pages because I new that there had to be more. Where were the other scriptures we have always been taught? What happened to:

Blessed are generous givers,
for they shall inherit great wealth

Blessed are the faithful tithers,
for theirs is the riches of earth

Blessed are the businessmen
for they will be first in the kingdom

Quickly I went to my handy Bible reference guide to show me what had happened to these "Cornerstone" scriptures. My first thought was that it had something to do with those pesky gays, but then I realized that’s silly; gays don’t read the Bible. Then I thought maybe my son had ripped that page out of the Bible, but no he doesn’t read the Bible either. Then I thought those scriptures must only be able to be seen by the highest level of Christian businessmen, but again I don’t think they read the Bible either.

Suddenly, like the curse of Malachi, it hit me. I fell to the floor screaming "Dear God, Noooooooooo." It had just been made clear that those verses aren’t in the Bible. "Smite me now Lord" I yelled, "I have spent my entire life trying to buy happiness and now there is no reason left to live. If I can’t purchase heaven, then I am definitely going to hell"

A voice called out to me "John, or do you go by John-Paul? Is it all right if I call you JP, John-Paul is awful hard to say?"

"Um, God," I responded ‘If you came here to annihilate me will you get on with it."

"My son," the boice boomed "as much as you deserve to be wiped clear off this earth, I will spare your life, but only if go around and educate people on the truth in scripture."

So, here it goes:

Matthew 5:3-10 (NIV)
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[4] Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
[5] Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
[6] Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
[7] Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
[8] Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
[9] Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
[10] Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Share-A-Thon

I am posting a brief email that my old college roomate, Peter, just sent me. I thought it was an interesting take on giving to support Christian radio.

For what its worth, Peter has no affiliation with City Bible. He attended the church once when he came out to visit me about five years ago. And at the time, he genuinely enjoyed the church. He thought it was entertaining. This despite the fact that he attended a PBC Graduation service, the second most boring service of the City Bible year (the first being Missions Sunday).

Also, my friend Peter grew up as a Methodist, which as most of you CBC members know, means that he’s really only half of a Christian. (Not being spirit-filled and all)

Anyway, here is his thought:

Well, the local Christian station was having a fundraiser over the weekend quite like a PBS Telethon, but it was named Share-A-Thon. Classic. I love these things; the people who are giving do so because they feel like they are contributing to the Christian cause but really they are just paying for their own enjoyment. Does the station serve seekers or contributors?

Plus the euphemisms didn’t end there. Apparently your sharing couldn’t come in the form of a tithe or donation but rather you would make a “Faith Promise.” What the hell is that?!? A Faith Promise sounds like something you declare at the altar when the Spirit tells you to move to Mongolia and you accept.

But then I guess the donators wouldn’t feel as good about getting fleeced of their money and now they can proudly proclaim the Faith Promise they have made to God and Star 99.1 to all their friends in their inclusive Christian circle.
