I got thinking about the church I grew up in. At some point in time that church had to be built from scratch. It was all brick on a stone foundation with ornate wood work and lots of stained glass windows. Think about what it would cost to build a church like that today. It would probably cost a year’s worth of tithe for every family in the congregation. Plus the church members would probably do most of the work themselves.
Now, where is that spirit of giving (both money and time) for a congregation with an existing church? If the same amount of tithing (both money and time) was given by every church today imagine the evangelistic outreach. I wonder if there was more willingness to sacrifice yourself in past generations that we have lost.

Well in my parents’ day at BT they were all asked to give something like $3000 per married couple towards building the domes. They brought in this special guest to talk about how everyone should give towards the building program.
Which reminds me, one of you was saying in the context of giving and tithing that you miss Pastor Iverson, and I know he’s a great guy and all, but that is the history of CBC. It wasn’t a whole lot different back then.
And it also got me thinking, I could be one of those guest speakers. I have all the giving scriptures memorized from my days at CBC; I could hire myself out to area churches when they need someone to convince everybody to give them all their money. I’d probably die of guilt, of course, but it’s just a thought.
Pastor Iverson never carried on about tithing like Frank Damazio does. In fact the church was a whole lot different until Frank entered into the picture. I grew up in Bible Temple and so did my mother. We know that that place was a good place, back then, and that Pastor Iverson was a very good, humble pastor. I don’t think you truly know the history of BT, as your family probably hasn’t been there from the start as my family has.
Don’t get me wrong, I do not like the way the church has become, under Frank’s control. It has changed a lot and is totally a business franchise now, with their “City Business Beaverton”, “City Business Lake Oswego”, etc. It’s really too bad that it has changed so much. It really started to change in the early to mid-90′s when I went to high school there.
