Six months down, a lifetime to go…
Posted on June 1st, 2005 by catalyst into the Uncategorized categoryToday is the six month anniversary of citybiblewatch. It has been a rather enjoyable six months, and I appreciate all the people who have commented and offered their opinion. I have learned a lot.
We had many rules when we first started this blog, most of which we have already broken. However, one of the rules we tried to stand by was “no gossip”. We did not want to print rumors, and we did not want to get sued.
Of course… rules are made to be broken.
So, here is the lastest rumor. Allegedly, City Bible has just fired two faculty members at Portland Bible College. Thus, significantly reducing the number of faculty at PBC. Apparently, they don’t offer tenure at PBC.
One of the recently fired faculty members was heard to say, “I imagine it’s only a matter of time before this gets on the blog.”
Not wanting to dissapoint…
Anyway, I could offer my thoughts on why these members got fired. But I really do not know the circumstances surrounding this situation. So, I’ll leave the speculation to others.

They’re restructuring the school, that’s why they were laid off.

They were taking a stand against what they knew was wrong. That’s why they got FIRED.

Maybe you shouldn’t work for a CHURCH school if you don’t support the CHURCH.

Call it a restructure if you want, but how can you feel good about letting some one go who has laid down there lives for the school for the last 18yrs. I hope that Miss Coleman can make the cut when they restructure the high school.

come on….someone at least post a description of the two who were fired for us not currently located in the Northwest who have lost our PBC inside track.

Alright, all you PBC alums, lets hear it.
Upgrade, Downgrade, or Down Right Stupid?
I don’t know either of these 2 guys, but I’ve heard a lot of really good things about them.
I’m sure they will be missed.

They were some of the only cool people there. They were the most down to earth with the most Education outside of the church. Seeing how they were the only non-conformists I can see how the great OZ saw fit to cut them loose. Those guys helped to keep me sane in a crazy world of demerits for trash in your trash can and other such items which were seen by leadership character issues (because everything must be spiritualized) and frankly I thought they were brilliant scholars as well. This is a dark day.
So I ask, what is next, firing Lanny Hubbard (the kindest man I ever met) because he posseses his own thoughts as well?

It was LT and Ken Ross and PBC will never be the same without them. They are both vibrant and intellectual men of God who forced their students to think hard and draw their own conclusions. They also questioned City Bible regularly during class sessions and frequently came to conclusions which were at odds with the manner in which things are run here.
‘Tis truly a shame to see them go. They will be sorely missed.

John,
As someone who goes to pbc why do you think they were let go? I dont know them but I have always only heard positive things about both.

John,
You speak your mind as well…
I’d be worried about getting “let go” as well, if I were you.

So Larry Taylor and Ken Ross, who are both intelligent, talented, and passionate teachers, get fired, and yet Hank and PBC still continue to hold on to Eugene and Joy Greco? The Grecos, who have managed to single-handedly destroy a once thriving and successful music department. Shocking - yet another obviously horrible and hasty decision. Maybe LT and KR will find jobs where they are appreciated. That way they can sit back and watch with the rest of us while PBC continues to shoot themselves in the foot.

First time blogger, long time viewer. I attended PBC from 2000-2003 and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to voice my displeasure with the “letting go” of two pillars withing the walls of PBC, Larry Taylor and Ken Ross. They were different in their respected theological convictions (Taylor a Calvinist; Ross an Arminian) but that was the beauty and diversity of their friendship and position at PBC. However, they were identical when it came to caring deeply for the students of PBC. I learned good theology in the classroom, experienced moving times of worship in the chapel, and had some great late night theological/life talks in the dorms but nothing can replace the times when these two men took an interest in me and others and believed in us. When men of their stature take the time out of their busy, hectic schedule simply let you know that they care, it makes a world of difference. They were more than professors of theology; they were men we could imulate. They each gave over a decade of their lives to seeing men and women follow the call on their lives. There is no doubt in my mind they left an indelible mark on the lives of MANY students in their tenure at PBC. For those of you who have had Ken or Larry as your professor take a moment on this blog to let others know what an incredibly irrational decision was made last week with the dismissal of two pillars on the hill…and have a backbone…QUIT USING THE ANONYMOUS BUTTON!!!
“AN ERA HAS COME TO END AT PBC”.
Larry Taylor and Ken Ross: I wish you the best in where GOD will sovereignly take you from this point.

Anon 1, I have many ideas as to why Ross and Taylor were let go, but no solid proof of any of them. I’d rather not resort to conjecture at this point.
Anon 2, I’m pretty sure I’m free to say whatever I want as long as I keep paying my bills on time. The only thing PBC can do is stop taking my money and send me home. And I might end up doing that for myself.

Both of the men that were let go are amazing teachers and they will be missed. I am sorry to see them go, but I would like to say that all of these accusations are coming with no solid ground to stand upon! These men were let go because the classes that they were teaching are being changed and they will no longer be needed. It has been said that one of these teachers has been barely hanging on to his job for the last few years because of the lack of need. They are both wonderful teachers, but their expertise is no longer required at PBC. They are both men of God and I know that they are trusting the Lord and I am sure that they know that He must be calling them to walk a new path. I know that this whole website is based on certain opinions of what a horrible church City Bible is, but restructuring PBC was a very good choice for them to make. It is needed and I believe that many people will be proud to say that they attend school there.

As a former PBCer who attended PBC from Spring 2003-Spring 2004, I can say that it was an honor for me to study under LT and Ken Ross. Of the various professors at PBC, LT and Ken Ross definitely epitomized for me what it means to have a shepherd’s heart. I connected well with them, because they held the same values I hold to, of the church being relational and organic, not a corporate, businesslike structure. LT’s and Ken’s willingness to tackle the “hard topics” brought a breath of fresh air to those of us who longed for something real, something genuine. I wish LT and Ken Ross the best as they seek the Lord’s direction in this new season.
