Scriptures from above
Posted on June 13th, 2005 by Reformed Pope into the Uncategorized, Scriptures categoryGenesis 2:7 & 18-22 & 25 (New International Version)
7Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
18Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him."
19Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
20The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.
21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.
22The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Genesis 3:16 (New International Version)
I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.

Just a thought…
When it says “and he [man] will rule over you [women]”, does that necessarily mean “and I [God] want him to rule over you”? I should research this one, but maybe it just means that man will rule over women, whether it’s right or wrong; which has been true up until the whole feminist movement very relatively recently.

Hmmm…given that “pain and childbirth” and “your husband will rule over you” are both in the same sentence, and both after “the fall,” it seems obvious that both are part of the curse? Not really God’s “perfect will.” Neither would have been true before “the fall.”
There’s much more to be said about the concepts of a wife’s “desire being for her husband” and a “husband ruling over a wife,” but it mostly sounds like both partners have less-than-fulfilling roles. The woman is essentially “trapped” in that she only desires her husband and where’s the love in “ruling?”
Let’s all be thankful that Christ redeemed marriage on the cross, along with everything else. Now marriage is about love and reflects Christ’s relationship with the church; it’s not about control and entrapment. Even “pain in childbearing” is now not a given with all of our wonderful, modern drugs.
Reformed Pope, just wondering your purpose in posting these particular verses?

1. There’s no question that sometimes a woman’s desire for her husband is a curse. You see this all the time. The man desires a day of golf and the women desires “quality” time with her husband.
Seriously though, the curse on man was hard work. So, based on that thought then I shouldn’t quit my job?
2. …“and where’s the love in ruling?”
Does not God rule over the earth? Wouldn’t you say that God… I dunno, maybe that “God so loved the world that he gave his only son”.
3. I posted those verses because I thought it was funny. They are also very relevant to the topic at hand. Of course, I am a happily married man, who loves his wife very much and shows her a great amount of respect. I’m sure if I acted the way I have written then I would be a miserable divorced man.
Sometimes it’s just fun to discuss.
