I would like to study the word AGAIN. Sometimes people on this blog misuse the word AGAIN and I would like to help clarify what it really means.

First I will use it in a sentence and then we can disect that sentence and see if we can all come to an agreement on what it means:

Here is your sentence: (taken from a comment by Cattle List)
“RP, you call me an idiot once more and I’m gonna kick your skinny ass again.”

Let’s look at the definition of the word AGAIN (from www.dictionary.com)

AGAIN:
1. Once more; anew: Try again.
2. To a previous place, position, or state: left home but went back again.
3. Furthermore; moreover: Again, we need to collect more data.
4. On the other hand: She might go, and again she might not.
5. In return; in response: paid him again.

As we can all see, the word AGAIN implies doing something that you have done before. In order for this statement to be true, the author would have had to previously kick RP’s ass. I happen to know RP rather well, and he is having a hard time remembering ever having his ass kicked.

Maybe what you meant to say was “RP, you call me an idiot once more and I’m gonna push your skinny ass again.” Or perhaps “…I’m gonna chase your skinny ass again.” I must admit that I have had my “ass” both pushed and chased, but never kicked.

Now lets look at another word and sentence:

“No, the problem is that you [Cattle List] are an idiot.”

IDIOT:(also from http://www.dictionary.com/.com)
1. A foolish or stupid person.
2. A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers.

I don’t think it is possible to describe you any better than definition #2. It clearly was written with you in mind. In fact I find it so funny that I’m going to write it again:

IDIOT: A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers.

  1. RP- if you blog in the tongues of men and of angels bu have not love, you are only a clanging cymbol. If you give all you possess to the Well and surrender your body to the flames (as a protest etc.) but have not love, you gain nothing.

  3. I must say that I also know RP very well and I think his memory is failing him. I seem to remember at least twice that his skinny ass was kicked. Once by his dad (or wait was that Jesse?) and then once by a tall awkward man named “wacker”. I specifically remember him chasing RP and connecting a swing of his foot with RP’s skinny ass.

  4. Quick Cattle List!!! I can’t wait to hear your logical argument to this allegation. I bet it will sound something like this: “Uhhhh. Well. It takes one to know one”, or if you’re really on the top of your game “I know you are, but what am I?” I can just see you in your prayer closet with latest copy of Hank’s book trying to think of all the witty ways to respond. I just wanted to warn you that “So’s your mom” isn’t really the best way to prove your not a person of profound mental retardation.

  6. Can we please choose not to make our jokes at the expense of people with disabilities? Speaking as the sibling of a person with disabilities, I feel particularly qualified to say that Cattle List’s issue isn’t a disability. It’s a refusal to be honest about the world around him. So, it’s insulting to people with disabilities (who, by and large, are doing their damnedest for every little bit they get from the world around them) to saddle their designation with some lazy jackass who can’t even bother to use all of his faculties….except as a primitive defense mechanism. Frankly, my sister deserves to be associated with a lot better than that…and there’s a lot worse fates out there than being “retarded” by nature. I’d venture to say that choosing to “retard” one’s self is far more tragic.
