I’m sorry I was home schooled. Could you express that as an equation for me?

Well…the decision was made in accordance with the school policy. Remember, it’s about upholding principle and morality.

It’s a good thing that God doesn’t think that way.
I would like to save them but…
rules are rules.

RP:
Again, with the “your mom” jokes. I am proud to be a contributor to your blog. Anyone who makes “your mom” jokes to oppose meaningless arguments is definitely ok by me.
Fezzik:
You rock. Not just a little bit, but a lot.
As for this expelling bit….well, frankly, the Christians probably inadvertantly did Shay a favor. Can you imagine the social torment she’d have to go through on a moment-by-moment basis if she were to stay at a Christian school and people knew her parents were gay?
Don’t get me wrong, I think the whole thing is deplorable and the school admin has behaved appallingly. However, I have to wonder what the hell Shay’s parents were thinking. I can only imagine there must have been some kind of extenuating circumstance going on.
This particular situation has probably worked out in the best way it could, given the details. What will happen to Shay in the aftermath is anyone’s guess. I think the real crime here is the ideology that created the situation to begin with…that we presume to designate a 22-year, likely loving and nurturing relationship as a deal-breaking sin because it upsets our sense of the norm, and then we use the Bible to explain why it’s ok for us to do this.
We don’t expel kids whose mothers have short hair or don’t wear head coverings. The Bible says that’s a problem, too. So?

Jiminy,
I’m with you that the admin shouldn’t expel a girl because of the sexual practices of her parents. However, I’m not at all with you if you think that the clearly cultural biblical references re: women’s hair & head coverings are equal to the clearly sinful mattter of sexual immorality (including homosexuality). Please tell me I misinterpreted your comments!?

Anon,
Paul’s use of the imperative voice is equivalent in both cases….therefore, the instructions for head coverings/hair and against homosexuality are comparable. It’s only in modern “fundamentalist” parlance that a difference has been established…as far as I’m concerned, the issues are both cultural in nature. Don’t believe me? Try walking into the Vatican in a tank top…they won’t let you do it any more than they’d let you walk in if you were making out with someone of the same sex as you. That’s not because of the Bible….it’s because of culture and tradition.
You didn’t misinterpret me, but pardon me for saying that “fundamentalists” have been “selectively” interpreting Paul for a long time.
