Winding Down

Posted on October 12th, 2005 by catalyst into the When We Quit category

Have you listened to a City Bible sermon lately?

They’re pretty good. And by "pretty good", I mean the word "tithe" isn’t peppered constantly throughout the sermon.

And this, JP and I have decided, was the ultimate goal of this blog.

Or course we’re not arrogant enough to think that our blog alone prompted this change at City Bible… …alright, actually we are that arrogant…

Anyway, the one year anniversary of this blog is fast approaching. And to celebrate the Pope and I have decided to list our Top 10 posts, write a farewell post, and then finally end this wonderful experiment in humor, religion and large lopsided breasts.

And while JP and I are quite content to list only our Top 10, we thought that perhaps some of our readers may have their own favorites. Thus, feel free to email us at:

and

mortonjp14@hotmail.com

In conclusion, the agenda for the next month and a half is to post our best blogs, pat ourselves on the back for doing such a wonderful job, and then get back to what we do best. For Johnpaul that’s taking care of a wife and raising three young children, and for me that’s trying to determine which Capitol Hill bar is going to have the hottest interns tonight.

And by “interns” he means highschool girls.

I recently heard that they now use sign language during the service to discuss tithe.

I heard they do this so that it won’t end up on tape and won’t end up on this blog.

Actually, I just made that up.

All joking aside, let me take this time to thank Pastor Frank* and all the pastors at City Bible Church for being open to the words written on this blog. By allowing our words to penetrate deep into their souls they have taken the first and most important step towards change.

    Thank you Frank*

Well, I definitely respect your desire to wrap up this blog. I’m sure this blog has made a difference for many former CBC-ers. I’ve enjoyed it for the mockery factor and to hear from those who have left CBC more recently than I have, to see people process and reflect.

I don’t think the quality of CBC’s recent sermons means the church has improved/changed.

My favorite was Dougie the Brown-Nosed Raindeer.

My favorite was when you guys decided to stop the blog with a top ten and then found out it was just a joke and I could go on living vicariously through your criticisim of the “churchman”. Thank God you were only kidding about wrapping it up.

this is joel and just so you know all of my blogs are going to make the top ten. so you might want to make it the top twenty if you want some of yours on there.

Are you guys seriously winding down?

If you are, I have some thoughts. First of all, I’ve really enjoyed the discourse on this site. I haven’t logged in or posted in a little while because I’ve been kind of busy with work lately. I feel like many of the folks who read and post on this blog have a similar purpose and view of God and Christianity. Some of us have been disillusioned by the corporate church world and the abuses we’ve seen there, and are looking for a real, honest Christian community.

I feel like we could re-purpose this blog to provide a place for discussion about spiritual things. We’ve done a fair amount of that already. Essentially, there is a far-flung virtual community here that appear to have common values and ideas. I don’t know about the rest of us, but I’m trying to figure out how to be the best Christian that I can while living my life. I can use some support from like-minded people. It’s been comforting to know that other people around my age are out there searching after the same thing and just as fed up with hypocrisy and insincerity as I am. I don’t feel like the only thing we have in common is our mutual dislike/distaste for the current situation in megachurches, but shared ideals about what Christianity CAN look like in the world.

So, that’s a long explanation to say I think there is a great community that has been established here and I’d hate to see the whole thing merely dissolve.
