Has Marc lost his Mojo?

And while I listened to it, I found it rather dull and fell asleep. However a couple of our reader’s actually paid attention to what Marc said. And as usual, they have some insight:

The grinch was spotted on Rocky Butte and has apparantly stolen a "mega" churches christmas.

I learned that the twelve days of christmas song is coded with christian truth ( Jesus is the partridge in the pear tree ? what?) and candy canes were early christian tracts, wow?
there was some good stuff about what Jesus has done , but at the end everyone stood up and read these grinchville (ie blogsite) stompers, declarations of faith about how THEY CHOOSE to be better christmas christians.

This decision not to have church is just another symptom of the CBC image. The image is: white people with lots of money — that’s why the sermon Sunday was about pausing during all the activities and shopping to remember the true meaning of Christmas. It was so nicely culturally relevant with the film clip of the Grinch and all. All of us rich white people felt truly admonished.
The image is: white people with happy families opening Christmas presents around the tree, carols in the background, turkey in the oven, eggnog in the fridge.
Since that is the image, it would be a shame to spoil it by having to go to church. Never mind that there are lonely people with no family. Never mind that there are many older people and ethnic cultures who celebrate Christmas Day by worshipping in church, no matter what day it falls on.
The image continues: Church must be a production — lights, cameras, flash and plasma screens! It wouldn’t be the proper image to have a small quiet service with a piano and a guitar, a short sermon and a prayer. No children’s ministry necessary, just keep the kids with you since it’s a short remembrance of Jesus. That kind of thing would just not be church, now would it?
I know they would protest that the big production is the week before Christmas. But aren’t they just contradicting their own message of laying aside the "Christmas frenzy" to remember the simplicity of the Gospel?

The Well has nothing to do with this blog. In fact, I believe I wrote a post criticizing the Well a couple months back. They oppose this blog as much as you do.
You also wrote: “I’m sad the Well (or CBC) is not the church for me. I hope I find one where the staff and church body will surround me and help grow.”
You seem pretty self-absorbed. Christianity is about helping other people, not other people helping you.

In response to “I Love The Truth”, I just want to add that I go to The Well and these Morton Boys do NOT in any way represent what our church body is all about. Tim Ringering, our pastor, is a wonderful preacher/teacher and I am saddened to think that you may not visit as a result of these guys’ personal issues with CBC and the un-Christlike attitude they have shown to all who will listen. I myself went to CBC for several years (which explains my interest in this blog site), and I’ve known the Morton boys for a long time as well. CBC is not a perfect church by any means; however, it is also not as evil and corrupt as they represent on this blog site. There are no perfect churches and I believe that people (the Morton Boys) pick and choose their offenses as a way of evading their own issues. The Well is a wonderful church, and it is definitely worth at least visiting. There are so many wonderful people at The Well who wouldn’t dream of participating in a blog site to slam other churches so please do not let that deter you.

It’s funny that you call yourself ILOVETRUTH, because so does this blog. I’ll bet if you gave it time to get to know me then we could really be great friends (you would at least like my wife, everyone does).
I’m not so sure that you aren’t some bored PBC student, but I’ll play along anyway: I’m sorry to hear that you won’t be visiting “The Well” based on what this blog says.
Good luck finding a church where there isn’t one single person who doesn’t offend you.
The pastors of The Well and I have had a number of talks about this blog and I know that they do not approve, but you know what…they still treat me the same. Maybe you would be more comfortable if they ex-communicated me from their church, but fortunately for me…actually after your post, they might (again I think my wife will save me).
You asked “How do I know that as a new comer or new believer that you are not going around to your friends doing the same to me behind my back?”
That’s easy…just read our blog. If there’s nothing written about you then you are safe. You see, what we do here is not “behind anyone’s back” like you might expect most Christians to act. No, we believe that we need to say it like it is… right out in front of everyone.
Here are two “Church” suggestions (whether you want them or not): Imago Dei (imagodeicommunity.com), home of the famous Donald Miller or perhaps Evergreen Community Church with Pastor Bob (evergreenlife.org). To set your mind at ease, I have never been to either of these churches. I’ve just heard good things.

Listen, I’ve never promoted The Well on this blog. I tend to think it’s just where bitter ex-City Bible members go.
And I’m a little tired of people telling me why I write on this blog. I know everyone thinks this blog is about attcking City Bible.
But it’s not. Really, it isn’t.
It’s not about satire. It’s not about speaking truth to justice. It’s not about greed. It’s not about sarcasm. It’s not about grace.
It’s about making me laugh.
Which it does.
I live my life to have fun.
You only get one life to live. I’m just greatful to be alive and determined to live that life to its absolute fullest.

Should I listen to my pastors??? Well…
I’m working on stopping… currently I’m on step nine… it’s a 12 step program… unfortunately step 10 is going to watch the “Eternity” play and I was busy each night it was showing…

Marc Estes never had any mojo that I could see. I never understood why so many thought to highly of him. His wife always seemed sweet, but he always seemed shallow and ineffective at evangelism. So, my .02 is that he never had it to lose, maybe he’s just finally lost his ability to act well.
Ilovetruth, my guess is that you are mis-representing yourself, but if you are that’s cool, you obviously provoked some lively discussion.
I echo some of what the other Well-attending Anon said, especially that it’s a great church and the pastor there isn’t a fan of this blog. However, I disagree with some of his/her points, as well. I can’t presume that the Mortons use this blog to avoid facing their sh*t because I don’t know them personally. Also, CBC is pretty corrupt. Saying “there are no perfect churches” in response to all of the nonsense there minimizes it way too much and almost excuses it. However, having the opinion that CBC is bad, even vehemently, doesn’t make one bitter. I have strong opinions against abortion-givers and drug-dealers; does that make me bitter? No. I vehemently oppose them because they destroy people. Same reason I feel so strongly about CBC. CBC epitomizes what Christ lived and died to destroy: legalism. I don’t hate the individual people there, but I definitely hate the system and it’s core tenets, and I’m fairly sure the Lord does, as well.
I agree that Imago Dei would be worth checking out, Ilovetruth, if you need a gen-X-friendly, hip, community-centered, theologically sound church. I wish you the best, and I hope that if you ever become or get close to leadership in whatever church you join, that you don’t see the things most of us here have seen that disillusion you.

You know I just read my last comment about how CBC sickens me,and I thought I sound kind of bitter, But let me tell you it’s not bitterness, it’s disgust, It is the same feeling I feel when I see pimps take advantage of women and children. Or wealthy business men scam the poor. Alright I’m done.

With a name like that, I also find it very hard to believe that you are a “new Christian” even if in the last year.
That being said, if you are truthful in saying that “I just don’t want to get into justifying my sinful actions by calling them something else…” Then you will have no problem finding a good church that will fit your needs–all of them will fit just fine. What a great way to establish judgement of others.

Back to Marc… I saw him “preach” the other day… I did not recognize him til he was introduced. I thought he was some gay/ex-gay convert with his shaved head, style of glasses, his style of clothing, expression, etc.
As a “guest/visitor” to CBC I was amazed at all the horn tooting he did about the exploits of CBC, 5300 church people, over 1300 new people in 2005, blah blah.

wow. they must be doing something right.you can always tell if a church has good leadership by the size and growth of the congregation. if a church isnt growing its stagnat or dead.I remember how Christs followers grew and grew with each sermon and how the first church in the book of acts congregation grew with the holy spirit

However, you obviously have nothing left to learn, which is evident by your ability to take words, statements and scriptures out of context in order to prove your shallow minded points. So let’s leave that alone for the moment and actually take some time to explore the facts.
Here are the types of people and ministries that your “truthful” revelations will actually hurt:
Let’s begin by addressing your comments about how City Business Church ignores the poor in order to line the pockets of the leadership. Let’s begin with the food house ministry. Due to the tireless efforts of the team that gathers and organizes this ministry, more food is distributed to the poor and needy on a monthly basis than the Portland organization, Meals on Wheels, does in an entire year. This doesn’t even include the thousands of dollars that are put towards rent, mortgage and utility payments for those who are in financial crisis. Nor does it include the extra wave of food distribution during the holiday season. 500 boxes were distributed on Thanksgiving alone. Also, over 500 families, who otherwise wouldn’t, will receive gifts for Christmas. Even as I write, dozens of volunteers are wrapping those gifts to make it as special as possible for the children involved. I’m sure that your comments will make them feel all warm and cozy about their efforts.
Your work on the Double Elder article was amazing. Actually, what’s so amazing is that you have no clue what you’re talking about. Yes, there is $2.7 remaining on the East campus and yes there is now $4.5 owing on the West campus. However, in your eagerness to paint a picture of deception, you missed the part where the West campus congregation actually covers the cost for the West campus. That’s right, other than the original start-up funds, it’s actually self-sustaining without subsidy from the East. Meanwhile, the overall budget has remained on task. This person you refer to as “Double Elder” and “spy” should actually be commended for his dedication towards being a good steward over that which the church body has charged him with. Again, I’m sure that your kind words have all but made up for his sleepless nights, time away from his family and the pressure to be accountable for every penny. This also makes me wonder how his family would feel if they were to read your words. Hmmm, very considerate of you.
You like to crunch numbers on the conferences to paint a picture of lucrative and shady business schemes. Does it matter to you that much of the income is used to send well over 150 young people to summer camp every year? Probably not, considering that you would only view that as hype that will vanish after two weeks.
Take into consideration the hundreds of small group leaders that continually open their homes to meet, strengthen and build relationships. They do this because they believe that everyone should have people in their lives for the good times and the bad. They believe that no one should be alone. Does it matter to you that your words will hurt them?
How about your pastor? Does your web site have his best interest at heart? Is this the type of effort that he would endorse and consider being a worthy investment of your time and energy? Would it be possible that he would feel it doesn’t represent him or the spirit in which he would lead the church? Is he a man who would value his fellow laborers? Or would he sit by and watch as people in his congregation attack other parts of the body, instead of working out their differences peacefully, biblically and yes - respectfully? Have you considered this?
You mention how Pastor Jack Louman was actually helpful to you during a difficult time of bitterness and frustration in your life. Well I’m sure that he feels your appreciation when you trash everything and everyone that he has poured his life into.
The point is that you are so busy looking for flaws, deception and acts of malicious intent that you have no eye to see the good. Even if I were to come to Pastor Frank Damazio’s defense, which he doesn’t need, it would be wasted because you have already made up your mind. So much so that you are able to callously lie about the words, intent and spirit in which he preaches and teaches. I.e. Damazio 3:16.
Here’s one last thought. Considering you have shown such tremendous concern for the poor and needy, why not publish how the rest of us can get involved with your humanitarian effort. However, in the chance that this doesn’t exist, how about if you cut the hypocrisy and help distribute some food boxes. After all, the work is plenty but the laborers are few. It would seem, however, that the critics are not. Besides, the being that you affectionately refer to as “Satan Claus” must be laughing all the way to the bank. Considering you have taken his place and are doing his job as the accuser of the brethren. With Christians like you, who needs him?

Due to the tireless efforts of the team that gathers and organizes this ministry, more food is distributed to the poor and needy on a monthly basis than the Portland organization, Meals on Wheels, does in an entire year. This doesn’t even include the thousands of dollars that are put towards rent, mortgage and utility payments for those who are in financial crisis. Nor does it include the extra wave of food distribution during the holiday season. 500 boxes were distributed on Thanksgiving alone. Also, over 500 families, who otherwise wouldn’t, will receive gifts for Christmas. Even as I write, dozens of volunteers are wrapping those gifts to make it as special as possible for the children involved. I’m sure that your comments will make them feel all warm and cozy about their efforts.

Yes, there is $2.7 remaining on the East campus and yes there is now $4.5 owing on the West campus. However, in your eagerness to paint a picture of deception, you missed the part where the West campus congregation actually covers the cost for the West campus. That’s right, other than the original start-up funds, it’s actually self-sustaining without subsidy from the East. Meanwhile, the overall budget has remained on task. This person you refer to as “Double Elder” and “spy” should actually be commended for his dedication towards being a good steward over that which the church body has charged him with. Again, I’m sure that your kind words have all but made up for his sleepless nights, time away from his family and the pressure to be accountable for every penny. This also makes me wonder how his family would feel if they were to read your words. Hmmm, very considerate of you.
You like to crunch numbers on the conferences to paint a picture of lucrative and shady business schemes. Does it matter to you that much of the income is used to send well over 150 young people to summer camp every year? Probably not, considering that you would only view that as hype that will vanish after two weeks.
Take into consideration the hundreds of small group leaders that continually open their homes to meet, strengthen and build relationships. They do this because they believe that everyone should have people in their lives for the good times and the bad. They believe that no one should be alone. Does it matter to you that your words will hurt them?
How about your pastor? Does your web site have his best interest at heart? Is this the type of effort that he would endorse and consider being a worthy investment of your time and energy? Would it be possible that he would feel it doesn’t represent him or the spirit in which he would lead the church? Is he a man who would value his fellow laborers? Or would he sit by and watch as people in his congregation attack other parts of the body, instead of working out their differences peacefully, biblically and yes - respectfully? Have you considered this?

The point is that you are so busy looking for flaws, deception and acts of malicious intent that you have no eye to see the good. Even if I were to come to Pastor Frank Damazio’s defense, which he doesn’t need, it would be wasted because you have already made up your mind.
