And there are still others out there.
Posted on January 11th, 2006 by catalyst into the Uncategorized categoryHere’s another great comment from, you guessed it, anonymous:
I was crying tonight feeling hopeless, when I found your site.
Although I think a lot of the humor and comments push things a little bit too far, I definitely relate to the disillusionment.
For me, PBC and BT were good experiences, although since I attended in the 80’s, a bit too much of a fashion parade.
The main concern I had and have is how often we were hyped up about our destiny. I’m from the X’er generation, and I felt like our generation got passed over for the younger set. Eric Knox not being given the youth after Bob MacGregor was reassigned is a perfect example. I agree with the poster who said that only the elder’s kids really had “destiny.”
But, for me the real difficuluty was being in an MFI church for 10 years. It DEVESTATED me. The cult-like symptoms were 10x what it was like at BT.
I really believed all of the covering and submission stuff, and geez, I can’t even begin to tell my story. What I can say is toward the end, the pastor’s wife got mad at me (for going to see her off at the airport) and refused to speak to me for 6 months, while her husband preached about not letting the sun go down on your anger.
I’m worked through my anger and bitterness, and am attending 2 local churches but stay the hell away from leadership, and feel very purposeless and destiny-less.
Just knowing that other people out there have gone through similar things helps a lot.
This is the main reason why I refuse to delete this blog. Comments like this.
Anyway, my advice to this commenter: Start drinking heavily! hahaha… …ahhh, I’m so funny. No, just kidding.
Actually, I think you’re probably doing the right thing, going to church, avoiding leadership. And trust me, feeling purposeless and destiny-less is something all people feel. It’s called “being human”. Some people don’t find their destiny until they are 40, 50, 60. It doesn’t make their lives any less important.
So just keep trudging along. And if you get depressed and start feeling down, slip in the movie Wedding Crashers, it perks me up everytime.

This isn’t related, but have you seen the new sign on that office that’s by the lost and found?
It says ASSIMILATION on it.
I laughed for hours and hours… and days.. in fact, I’m still laughing.
come on people… watch star trek. this is the most hilarious thing ever.

I don’t see what’s so funny about it?

I’m trackin’ with ya, it’s the whole Borg thing. Very funny!

I would love a picture of this sign. Come on folks. Everyone’s got a camera phone. Take a pic, send it in, and I’ll see if I can rummage you up a prize from our prize closet.

Justin,
If you receive said picture, do please post it. The Hungarian contingency would really like to see it.
Greetings, Locutus….how’s the collective treating you? Seems like resistance maybe wasn’t so futile after all…..
January 12th, 2006 at 6:23 am
PS:
Cat, what’s up with the “40, 50, 60″ deadline on “finding your destiny”? Does that mean you’re just twiddling your thumbs from say, 40-60 until you die? If destiny is such a big great thing, isn’t it…well, to quote a favorite wobbly-voiced nun:
“A dream that will need all the love you can give
Every day of your life for as long as you live.”
?
It’s my hope that the journey lasts all the way until the destination…and really, then, the destination itself is just where one happens to stop (die). So, in that case, it really is the ongoing process that counts, no?
Or if not, then maybe it’s the fun you have while drinking heavily to survive the bloody ongoing process.

Re: Destiny and purpose.
It just seems to me that people get in their 20’s, realize they don’t have their lives completely figured out, and then start getting frantic and depressed.
Just live your life, have fun, and try new things. Eventually, you’ll find your purpose, and if it isn’t until your 60, then so be it. At least you’re having a fun life.
January 12th, 2006 at 9:32 am
Resistance wasn’t futile, but it did take me close to 10 years to get that BT/TCS/CBC/PBC/MFI-implanted chip out of my brain.
January 12th, 2006 at 10:48 am
Cat,
I’m with you…I call this 20’s depression you’re describing “pre-life crisis” (I say it without malice, too, because I totally do it myself).
But, I also think that the idea that there is one purpose (that we’re supposed to somehow find and have and keep on our mantelpiece) as opposed to a process (that encompasses many moment-by-moment purposes) is the thing that creates these kinds of crises. If it’s just an issue of waiting until 60 to see what the one big thing is, then that’s just delaying the crisis, seems to me. Not trying to be argumentative, just enjoying the discussion at hand.
Locutus….now you’re reminding me of Spike from Buffy. Although, his chip was there to prevent him from sucking people’s blood, so that’s a little different…. When were you at BT? I was there from 81-98.

I attended CBC for over 20 years with my family. We were very involved as were my children which also attended PBC and were on staff. I do not want to provide to much information as I need to be anonymous. I will not get into all the reasons we left except to say that the “church” had departed from many biblical mandates. There is a new fresh move of God and so far CBC is not there and in some respects in opposition to it exhibited by their actions. There is a excellent book out by Miles Monroe titled Rediscovering The Kingdom. Read it!!

jiminycricket - I too need to remain anonymous for the sake of people close to me who are still very connected to CBC, MFI, et al. Suffice to say I was born into BT, attended a planted church which later became an MFI member, then attended PBC. Given the dates you posted (81-98) I was there before you got there, and left PBC before you left. Based on your blogger profile I am older than you, and older than the guys who started this thing, but you look familiar so I probably know your family or an older sibling if you have one.
January 12th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
Ah, Locutus. Glad you were able to escape the collective. I was Hugh for awhile, but there was too much incompatibility between my new programming and the CBC hive programs. My circuits were beginning to fry.
It was difficult to disconnect having been there since before PBC in 1976 (there. I dated myself.)
The best Person to travel with to seek out new life and new civilizations is the Holy Spirit. Make sure your communications array is in good working order. And by all means, keep your shields up. There is a lot of debris from former battles with the Cube.
Resistance is NOT futile.
January 13th, 2006 at 1:42 am
Locutus and anonymous,
Very interesting chatting with you two…and my curiosity is still rather piqued, though I respect your need for anonymity. It just seems worthwhile to perhaps point out that everything regarding the Collective as we’re defining it requires voluntary plugging in. The faceless grey *they* of the cube can’t take anybody without permission…and really, to be honest, they’re not so powerful in the great scheme of things.
I was watching “Saved” with a couple buddies last night, and I mentioned after the film that really nothing in the movie is exaggerated….that it really all was/is like that. My buddies laughed. They didn’t believe me. They didn’t believe anyone would ever be crazy enough to act like that or go along with neurotic people who did. That’s the trick….once a person is on the outside (or if they never were in to begin with), it’s not even a stretch anymore to see that the whole thing is just nuts. You don’t have to rack your brain for reasons — it just becomes clear.
So, this goes for the anonymous person whose words were in the original post: the day will come when you won’t cry about it anymore. It’s the dissonance (uncomfortably close association) between who you are now and who you used to be there that create most of the pain and the struggle in walking away. Keep walking….you’ll never forget, but I’m telling you as someone who’s going on 8 years of “recovery” time — it’s just better out here.

All these star trek references are making me joyful.
i’ll definitely take a picture next time i go there.
………which i have no idea when that will be.

My heart goes out to our new bloggers who experienced years of legalism in the BT/CBC world.
I SO agree with the concerns about the destruction that comes from the whole BT/CBC hype about “destiny.” Our destiny is not about having title or position within a church! It’s not about climbing some hierarachical ministry ladder that only has room for a few. God has plans for all of us, and they’re not primarily about what we will DO with our lives (although he does give all members of his body gifts and talents to serve the whole), but who we ARE and will BE and what our HEARTS are and the quality of our relationship with Christ and our influence on the lost sheep in this world. The Lord loves us and wants us, his children, to accept and live in that love. He wants us to have hope and freedom and sanity. He does not have Plan A and Plan B for our lives and stand in heaven hoping against hope that we won’t mess up Plan A. He is sovereign. He shapes our hearts and directs our steps, sometimes through our sin, our hurts from others sins, and the devil himself.
I was in BT in the 90’s. Glad to know I’m no longer the oldest blogger here, although I’m sad to know that those immersed in the 70’s & 80’s are still so painfully aware of that place’s harmful impact on your lives! God, please heal us all!

If you ever do decide to take down the blog.. let me know beforehand so I can get a backup/export of the posts/comments.
I’ll load them up into that domain we registered a while ago, where they can sit and be found in google for all to find.
Think of it as your permanent stain on the internet.
January 13th, 2006 at 7:15 am
Thanks Henri.
Though, I don’t imagine I will ever delete it. I’ve thought about it, just to get it out of my life. But there are so many hurt ex-CBC members, who continue to find the blog, that I kind of feel obligated to keep it up. Even if I stop blogging regularly.
However, the thought of being a permanent stain on the ineternet, delights me immensely.

Jiminy: I was disappointed in Saved, and I couldn’t figure out why. It took me a bit to realize for parody to be funny, you have to exaggerate things. It wasn’t funny to me, because it wasn’t a parody, so much as a documentary. I still bought the DVD though.
Henri: Crazy to run into you here. Do you remember when I helped you clean your room at your mom’s house while you were moving out? You gave me a huge car stereo with a crazy EQ. I don’t know how long ago that was. I must’ve been 12 or something.
To the anonymous anonymouses: I understand where you’re coming from, as I was/am in the same position. When I left, I thought the hardest part would be all the things I imagined would happen: offenses, loss of employment, loss of relationships, etc. The reality was totally different. The hardest part was that no one gave a damn. Not ONE person. Anyway, I agree with Jiminy. They only have as much power over you as you give them.
To everyone else: could we get off the Star Trek thing for a bit? You’re nerding me out here. (Those that knew me in high school should get the irony there). Maybe something along the lines of the Goa’uld’s desire for utter dominion?
January 13th, 2006 at 9:01 am
Jiminy, I appreciated what you said about “disonnance”. I can relate to that very much. It was painful for me to leave CBC after a seeming lifetime of accomplishments only to feel frustrated and empty. I still have friends there and even this week (after nearly a 5 year absence) I was asked about coming back into the Collective. Cat would be proud of me as I replied that there’s not enough beer in the world to make me want to go back! haha But my point is that it doesn’t hurt any more like it did at first. Now I only feel pity for those who still defend it blindly.
I was also a victim of the Destiny mentality in my youth. Anyone remember the Dragonslayer conferences by Wendell Smith? If that didn’t give you on a Destiny-complex nothing would. I’ve since come to discover that your WHOLE LIFE is about discovering your destiny one day at a time. The problem with the typical destiny mentality is that it makes young people think that they are somehow supposed to save the world by the time they are 25 or they have failed. Even worse, some very bright minds were taken away from colleges and careers because they thought that being part of the CBC intern machine was fulfilling their destiny, only to be faced with the reality that Doug can only have so many paid staff to take on conferences.
And I don’t care who doesn’t like it, the Star Trek references are awesome! haha
January 13th, 2006 at 9:41 am
You’re right on FICM.
I remember being at at Twin Rocks Summer Camp and Georgie Banoff’s (sp?) electric neon light saber blowing the circuit breakers during the “cool” part of the Dragon Slayer song.
Good times.
January 13th, 2006 at 11:56 am
Oh…I just can’t take it any more! I’ve sat on the sidelines watching, reading, laughing, crying for too long….and a Dragonslayer reference is more than I can resist. Holy crap I think I may still even have the cassette tape with Wade Steele rocking the keyboard with samples of Wendell Smith shout…shout…shoutin’ at the devil! (don’t get me wrong…I loved Wendell. Guy was passionate, you gotta give him that!)
For those who care…I’m a recovering TCS/TCHS/BT/CBC/PBC’er. I spent from 1981-1998 heavily on or around that school, youth group, church, campus, etc. and although I made many great friendships and shared in a plethera of wonderful memories, I’m proud to say that the little “free thinking” ability I had led me to a point where 7 years ago I was able to walk away and never look back.
I recently emailed Johnpaul, as I wanted to share with him my feelings toward this blog and how a sermon I had heard on Jan. 8th really brought the feelings we all seem to share to mind. The link is at: http://www.vanfcog.org/Sermons.htm for any that are interested. The sermon was on unity and understanding what issues are truly necessary for salvation and how we can all “just get along” on the rest of the stuff.
My youth spent at BT/CBC was saturated in confliction over my “destiny”, as I felt exactly the same way many of you have expressed in your comments above. Shoot, I even had a “word from the Lord” (from Gary Zaleski at a Twin Rocks summer camp) that said I would write a book on advice for young people (dating and such - which was ironic as I turned out to be a virgin ’til I was almost 30 and rarely had a serious girlfriend!). But at the time I was actually interested in writing so the word really “felt” right. Hasn’t happened to date though, so have I missed my destiny!? As a budding script writer now-a-days, my hope is that Gary Z. was just off in his medium and there’s still time for me to get back on track! I’m sure God has been worried this whole time!
BT/CBC really did a job on my ability to understand “being human” in relation to “striving for perfection”. My recollection is example after example of leaders fronting their flawlessness and never admitting their weaknesses. Pastor Dick seemed humble enough, but after he left things just weren’t the same. There were examples of “real” men like Lanny Hubbard, though, and thank God for them. But ultimately, it took only one year of PBC to cure me of wanting to attempt to move into Youth Ministry! The Business world is much less cut-throat!
Not sure what point I’m trying to make here though. Guess I just wanted to engage a bit and join the discussion. BTW…the Star Trek stuff is lost on me. I get some of it, but I was more a Buck Rogers fan!
If I make it into Heaven, this twice tattooed, rock music lovin’, overly sarcastic, world-walker will be relieved that what I’ve come to feel is a sincere relationship with Jesus was accurate. And I’ll be sad for the people at CBC that couldn’t get past legalism and a cookie cutter mentality of what a Christian should be.
If they end up being right, though, and I didn’t tithe enough, or write that book of dating advice, or conform to the mold, or flail around on the ground and bark enough, then maybe, just maybe, the nearly twenty good years I put in up there will buy me a drop or two of water from the outstretched arm/finger of Frank or Doug.
All said, though, I love all ya’all. Them, us, the others. May Christ speak to us and lead us to a place where we can unite in an example of His love that a lost world desparately needs to see!
I was never a white sheep, I was never a black sheep. But a gray sheep was never good enough either. Thank God he took me as I was and made me His own!
January 13th, 2006 at 5:18 pm
Twin Rocks, everything summer camp shouldn’t have been.
Dragonslayer didn’t really catch on until the end of my high school years so I don’t have too much to say about it. But I’ll never forget the neon t-shirts. RAD!!!

A thought on the whole destiny thing:
Cj Mahaney (Covenant Life Church, Sovereign Grace Ministries) and his outreach churches were known as People of Destiny in the 80’s when he was a guest speaker at PBC’s retreat.
They eventually changed from a man-focus to a God-focus with a name change to Sovereign Grace.
I get a tad suspicious now when anyone talks too much about our destiny. It’s so NOT about us–it’s about Him and HIS destiny.
I’m sure most of you are aware by now, but Josh Harris took over CJ’s church. I visited it several times (under cj) and think it’s the healthiest church I’ve ever been to.

Wow! It’s amazing how the power of technology now enables a protester to state their complaints from the comfort of their own home in complete anonymity. This way the voice of slander and character assassination never needs to show it’s cowardly face.
No matter what organization a leader may associate with, he will always expect a certain amount of criticism. However, you Morton Boys, and Gal, have taken criticism to a whole new level. You need to understand, the nature in which these pages are being written might sting the leadership, but the real pain will be felt by people that you have shown no regard for by the way you have handled your opinions. Please let me explain:
You speak of this web site as “revealing the truth about City Bible Church.” Well, an important thing about truth is getting your facts straight. Obviously you are hyper sensitive to the prospect of tithing and giving. So much so, that the very words become an opportunity to gain inebriation rather than learning. However, you obviously have nothing left to learn, which is evident by your ability to take words, statements and scriptures out of context in order to prove your shallow minded points. So let’s leave that alone for the moment and actually take some time to explore the facts.
Here are the types of people and ministries that your “truthful” revelations will actually hurt:
Let’s begin by addressing your comments about how City Business Church ignores the poor in order to line the pockets of the leadership. Let’s begin with the food house ministry. Due to the tireless efforts of the team that gathers and organizes this ministry, more food is distributed to the poor and needy on a monthly basis than the Portland organization, Meals on Wheels, does in an entire year. This doesn’t even include the thousands of dollars that are put towards rent, mortgage and utility payments for those who are in financial crisis. Nor does it include the extra wave of food distribution during the holiday season. 500 boxes were distributed on Thanksgiving alone. Also, over 500 families, who otherwise wouldn’t, will receive gifts for Christmas. Even as I write, dozens of volunteers are wrapping those gifts to make it as special as possible for the children involved. I’m sure that your comments will make them feel all warm and cozy about their efforts.
Your work on the Double Elder article was amazing. Actually, what’s so amazing is that you have no clue what you’re talking about. Yes, there is $2.7 remaining on the East campus and yes there is now $4.5 owing on the West campus. However, in your eagerness to paint a picture of deception, you missed the part where the West campus congregation actually covers the cost for the West campus. That’s right, other than the original start-up funds, it’s actually self-sustaining without subsidy from the East. Meanwhile, the overall budget has remained on task. This person you refer to as “Double Elder” and “spy” should actually be commended for his dedication towards being a good steward over that which the church body has charged him with. Again, I’m sure that your kind words have all but made up for his sleepless nights, time away from his family and the pressure to be accountable for every penny. This also makes me wonder how his family would feel if they were to read your words. Hmmm, very considerate of you.
You like to crunch numbers on the conferences to paint a picture of lucrative and shady business schemes. Does it matter to you that much of the income is used to send well over 150 young people to summer camp every year? Probably not, considering that you would only view that as hype that will vanish after two weeks.
Take into consideration the hundreds of small group leaders that continually open their homes to meet, strengthen and build relationships. They do this because they believe that everyone should have people in their lives for the good times and the bad. They believe that no one should be alone. Does it matter to you that your words will hurt them?
How about your pastor? Does your web site have his best interest at heart? Is this the type of effort that he would endorse and consider being a worthy investment of your time and energy? Would it be possible that he would feel it doesn’t represent him or the spirit in which he would lead the church? Is he a man who would value his fellow laborers? Or would he sit by and watch as people in his congregation attack other parts of the body, instead of working out their differences peacefully, biblically and yes - respectfully? Have you considered this?
You mention how Pastor Jack Louman was actually helpful to you during a difficult time of bitterness and frustration in your life. Well I’m sure that he feels your appreciation when you trash everything and everyone that he has poured his life into.
The point is that you are so busy looking for flaws, deception and acts of malicious intent that you have no eye to see the good. Even if I were to come to Pastor Frank Damazio’s defense, which he doesn’t need, it would be wasted because you have already made up your mind. So much so that you are able to callously lie about the words, intent and spirit in which he preaches and teaches. I.e. Damazio 3:16.
Here’s one last thought. Considering you have shown such tremendous concern for the poor and needy, why not publish how the rest of us can get involved with your humanitarian effort. However, in the chance that this doesn’t exist, how about if you cut the hypocrisy and help distribute some food boxes. After all, the work is plenty but the laborers are few. It would seem, however, that the critics are not. Besides, the being that you affectionately refer to as “Satan Claus” must be laughing all the way to the bank. Considering you have taken his place and are doing his job as the accuser of the brethren. With Christians like you, who needs him?
