The Big Bible Logo Battle
Posted on February 10th, 2006 by catalyst into the Lawsuits & Logo's categoryIf you have been paying close attention, you may have noticed that there is a bit of a logo battle brewing between City Business and City Bible.
See, when this new blog site initially started, we took the logo from City Bible’s website, just to give our site a little more color and flair, believing that imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery.
And while we questioned the legality of this, we also carefully reviewed City Bible’s website and failed to see any trademark insignia around their logo. We also mentioned this lack of a trademark several times on our blog.
Oddly enough, a couple of days ago, City Bible put a small TM near the bottom corner of their logo. This naturally caused us some alarm. We had not seen this before. And in the interest of fairness, we added a small TM to the bottom of our logo as well.
I was also a little skeptical and took it upon myself to do some research. Just because you put a tiny TM next to your logo, does not necessarily mean your logo is trademarked.
I performed a fairly exhaustive search on the US Patent and Trademark Office website, looking for City Bible’s name or logo, and I was unable to find City Bible anywhere on the site. Not wanting this fabulous logo to fall into the wrong hands, I promptly sent off my own application, claiming a trademark for this beautiful colorful logo.
The results are still pending, and I will not know for a while whether my application is approved. However, in the meantime, I would like City Bible to know that I respect their need to use the logo, and I will be happy to let them continue to keep it on their website for a small fee, or a tithe, if you will.

I believe this logo truly captures the essence and sprit of City Bible Church. An insignia that screams Faith, Love and Giving, without so much as saying a word.

Besides, I’m pretty sure they’re going to have a tough time actually winning a lawsuit.
Paypal (www.paypal.com) recently tried to get the www.paypalsucks.com website “logo” taken down, since they are using ”unauthorized” images of the paypal trademark logo.
PayPal lost.
So I’m not sure that CBC will win anything, especially given their lack of trademark and the fact that the *real* CBC logo uses the word “Business” in italics. There’s certainly no confusion there.
Maybe we should add an “Online Giving” link to this website…. *then* people might get confused for sure!

Let me add to this post:
CBC, You are my b*itch…have been for years…and I’m loving every minute of it.
No, that isn’t the right attitude to have. Yes, it is a fact.
You see:
every time CBC has called their attorney to inquire about a lawsuit…
every time you called a parent to warn them of the dangers of “The Mortons”…
every time you called one of my friends and advised them to keep their distance…
every time you do anything to “get” me, all you accomplish is to “get me going”.
You just don’t get it.

So here we are, in a Logo battle. Who’s logo is it? Bible or Business? Only time will tell.

It wouldn’t matter if CBC had the logo copyrighted or not. You can use copyrighted material as long as you aren’t representing yourself as affiliated with CBC itself under the parody clause of copyright law. This is how sites like The Onion can use the presidental seal and all the various (some company) sucks sites can use company logos. There’s a more in depth explanation here

Whether they could or couldn’t use it would be hard to say one way or another without asking a copyright lawyer. Copyright and patent law is so confusing I don’t think anybody really understands it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t send them a Cease and Desist letter just for grins.

Now what purpose does it fill to take a church’s logo and either change it, poke fun at it, or whatever? How does that further the kingdom? I’m beginning to think that there is nothing this church could do that would be acceptable to 90 percent of the people on this blog. I mean really, the logo? For what?
And I don’t know if the person who said that the Morton’s parents were at fault for their sons, was serious or not. They’re grown men. They know exactly what they are doing.

We really have the best readers. These last few days of blogging have been some of my favorite. I haven’t stopped laughing all weekend.
As for a sit down with PF…last time I did that he got 12 men to gather around to try and intimidate me (it really just made me aware of how intimidated they were of me [at the age of 18]). However, I would love for you to try and arrange it. I’d be willing to bet you don’t get very far and will likely lose a friend over even suggesting it.

I consider myself blessed to have the Morton parents as my friends. Whoever wrote that comment obviously does not know them. I am looking forward to spending eternity with Jesus and His friends — the Mortons! And good grief! If parenting was the criteria for admittance to heaven, we’re in deep trouble — all us parents, from Adam on down.

The fact that you consider “pastor” Frank to be “the head man” shows exactly how skewed and “business like” is the CBC. You’re merely proving the point.
How about if you arrange for the Morton boys to have a sit down with ALL the pastors, wives, deacons, ushers.. at local starbucks? I think neutral ground is only fair, and hey…. invite the press while you’re at it.

For crying out loud! You sure don’t like the words, “head man”, do you? How about senior pastor. Or better yet, the one who gives the sermon most of the time. I agree neutral ground is a must. And I don’t think I would lose any friends over suggesting this. If so, they weren’t my friends to begin with and I would fall right in line with the rest of you. But the question is if I can do it, would you go? Just imagine. A sit down with PF. An oppurtunity to say face to face what is said here on the blog. There is no need for a signed letter. There is no need to involve the deacons or other pastors. This is between two men, The Reformed Pope and PF. I know the other Morton boys are involved as well but I really don’t know them that well if at all. But I do know the Reformed Pope. And before anyone gets started, let me just say for the record that I’ve known the Reformed Pope for awhile and he is as cool as a fan. I have no beef with him. And I like him and his family as well. If he ever needed anything and it was in my power I would do it. But I also know that if you really want to change or call attention to something, and you have an oppurtunity to go to the source, than take it. Everyone loves a blog. You can say what you want without looking at someone in the eyes. You can sound real intelligent. You can be as “ballsy” as you want when you are behind keyboard and a screen. Now this doesn’t just apply to people on this blog, that would include me as well, but to anyone who blogs for whatever reason.( Although I have to admit it is kind of addicting). But what I am talking about is going to the source of this pain that mot people on this blog feels. And I don’t say that trying to be funny. If these people “follow” you, then they wouldn’t see any harm in meeting with PF. The fear is that if by chance an understanding is met, the blog may change or even end. God forbid! Why does it have to be video taped? Reformed Pope’s word is good enough, isn’t it? It’ good enough for me. I don’t think that the Morton boys are the only ones that have been hurt. CBC is like 5000 strong. That’s alot of people. There are bound to be more people hurt out there. But that’s in any church or organization. But you are probably right when you say there will be another blog if this one stops. You’re hooked, addicted, caught up. There is a monkey on your back that you just can’t shake. You really don’t want a resoloution do you? I don’t know if anyone really does. Hell, this is fun! And as long as none of us confronts our pain, we can just keep talking, joking, and throwing CBC under the bus. Why not? It’s good “therapy”. I enjoy the dialouge. I enjoy the debate. I love the comedy. But I will not get on this thing ever again unless I get a response fron the Reformed Pope. Are you or are you not willing to meet one on one with PF for an oppurtunity to dicuss why you are so sour on CBC. There is nothing to “resolve”. It’s not about “resolution”. It’s about having a good time poking fun at a church that takes itself WAY to seriously… (and teaches too much on tithing).
It’s also “about” being open and honest with how we feel, instead of shoving them down and pretending we are “all better now”.
Seriously, even if I met with Frank, and he “fixed” whatever is “wrong” between me and the church… I’d still come here and laugh, and if the blog disappeared, I’d start my own. Why? Because I enjoy the thought of making people like Frank, the CEO of a big church, have heartburn.
Yes, it’s petty. But.. heh.. I’m a result of my upbringing. That’s what a lifetime at TCHS and Bible Temple will do to a person. “They” have nobody to thank but themselves.

That’s the worst excuse ever…if we just succumb to our “upbringings” we would never have to be held accountable to the things of Christ…”it’s just the way I am…my dad beat me, so I beat my kids, I was abused, so I should be an abuser, my parents yelled a lot, so I should yell, the church hurt me, so it’s OK to try to hurt them back.” Is that really what Christ teaches? I once heard a wise person say (and no, it wasn’t someone from CBC) that our lives are really only about 10% our circumstances and 90% how we respond to it. Because of Christ in us, we have the ability to rise above our circumstances, we have all the power of Christ, who lives IN us and THROUGH us-the access to his grace, love, forgiveness to be taken to make us new creations, to pour out on those around us. Why would anyone want to come to Christ with the mentality that we still have to live under “how we were raised.” I know I wouldn’t, and that’s not what he teaches-we are new creations when we let him in our lives (2 Cor. 5:17), I am so thankful for that, I don’t have to live as a “result of my upbringing. That’s a lame excuse to pick on people or be unforgiving or not gracious. Not saying that we don’t have issues to work through b/c of how we were raised, but my God wants to take those things from me and make me brand new-with him as my father and teacher.

Good one. You assume I care what you or the bible things, which I don’t. My years at TCHS convinced me that it’s all a bunch of hypocricy and lies. Nothing bad has happened to me since “giving up” my religion, in fact I feel free as a bird.
So blah blah blah to someone who cares. You can convince yourself that it’s all great and wonderful and how you’re so perfect that you can preach to me.. yet the fact that you even are hear trying to “convert” me by trying to make me feel guilty is just more evidence that the bible temple city bullsh*t church has suckered you in with the rest of them. Do you ever ask yourself WHY you are defending Frank? Isn’t he capable of defending himself? Why does he need to? What are you so afraid of that you can’t handle a group of people who disagree with you?
Get over yourself and go away. Nobody is forcing you to read this blog, or visit, or anything to do with it. The more you post, the more responses there will be, and the more entertainment you create.

I wasn’t trying to “convert” you or make you feel guilty, it’s what the bible says.
to the 2nd, fired up anon…why are you so angry and defensive? I wasn’t fired up at all, and yes, I do have an idea what cults sound like, b/c I came out of one before I came to know Christ. I’m not a brainless follower, a member of CBC, nor did I claim to be “wonderful.” I have many issues that I am working on with Christ (I listed many in my post of how I was raised). What I said is what the Bible tells me (again, 2 COR 5:17, and also Romans 7 and 8, living in the flesh vs. the spirit.) Nothing I said has anything to do with the power of “self-change.” If you read back over what I said, “Because of Christ in us, we have the ability to rise above our circumstances, we have all the power of Christ, who lives IN us and THROUGH us-the access to his grace, love, forgiveness to be taken to make us new creations, to pour out on those around us.” See? Nothing of ourselves can ever change us, but Christ in us can…and he gives us choices to respond to hurt in bitterness ro rage, etc. etc., or to the truth of of what he tells us in HIS word, and the power over sin through him on the cross. Please read thoroughly through the posts before you just “react.”
I have nothing out of myself to give that is good, I need him more than anything to overcome “my upbringing.” I am not defending CBC or PF, it’s not my church or my pastor, but I am defending Christ’s work on the cross, and his ability to make all things new, so that we don’t have to live under the things of our past. I am NOT into self-help, “self-change” Dr. Phil crap. It’s only by the grace of God…

I agree it’s not an “excuse”, but it is a commonality many of us obviously share. When 100+ people “congregate” into a single them… do you think maybe that someone should pay attention?
There’s a specific reason many of us are here. Figure that out, and we’ll all be happy.
We’ll still laugh at the blog, of course, but we’ll be a little happier that another generation of mindless drones isn’t being produced.
Speaking of mindless drones.. maybe a comparison between the “average CBC’er” and a borg drone might be fun. I’ll bet there are a lot of common characteristics.

I am a believer and do care what God thinks. There are many times I’m uncomfortable with how far this blog goes. However, I come here of my own volition and therefore do not attempt to police anyone here. It’s NOT my blog, afterall.
What those of you who “preach” at all of us have to get is that your words are just more of the same. All I hear from you is blah, blah, blah. And like it or not, all of your scripture-quoting and argumentiveness is of the same spirit.
If you want to help us, pray for us or better yet let the spirit interceed for us through you because you just might mess it up.
And, what would RP meeting with PF accomplish? I don’t think PF will change, nor do I think RP will change (I assume you’ll take that as a compliment). I used to think resolution was always possible. I’ve come to realize that if the other person won’t let go (or even recognize) their issues it isn’t. It isn’t always the sheep who is wrong. Sometimes we have to give ourselves permission to be the right one, and cut our losses and move on.
And yes, talking about it after the fact, can be therapy.

Lots of us here believe that only fools take the Bible literally and the leaders who “challenge” their congregations to have faith are, in fact, just giving their own opinion on the words in the Bible.
The Bible, it’s tennants and prophets are just as legitimate as any other text. The problem occurs when people like ONE LOVE come on this blog and state their opinion as being directly inspired by God, when in fact, all it is is a bunch of brainwashing from years at TCHS and Temple.
CBC is just a means of cooperating with a worldwide power structure which formed millenia ago and has somehow maintained a power over the world by warfare, famine, capitalist gain, emperialism, slavery, colonialism ect. I’m not talking out of my ass here either, I don’t think? I just got out of the military 3 months ago and what I saw sickened me. The church has so much power that in Basic Training I was required to attend Christian services on Sunday AM. And in basic training it doesn’t pay to be the odd man out. It was a revelation of sorts as to how the world operates. This small experience opened my eyes to the constant blanketing of indoctrination each one of us is this world experience blindly or not, from birth to death.
If you want to talk about the facts of history ONE LOVE, then explain how we got our freedom of speech. It was people exactly like us bloggers back in the day who saw through the leadership and desired a new way. Now we have this ability and nobody, including some stupid “sit-down” with PF is going to stop this open dialogue. If you don’t like the blog their may still be time to go sign up to help direct luxury SUV’s out of the CBC parking lot after the services today.

I like this quote. I think it should be the standard response to anyone who desires to put a clamp on the Morton boy’s right to freedom of speech.
After all, it is the same freedom that gives Frank the power to preach from the pulpit how giving to *his organization* is actually supposed to be some kind of blessing for the giver.

What’s the difference? Once is preached at CBC, the other is preached from Vatican City.

The logo is perfect but the outer pink line may be to “gay” for some believers.
It may hint at a hidden agenda.

You want to know what would be great? If Pastor Frank agreed to meet with all who posted on the blog as well as the Morton brothers; host a Q & A dinner or something. Unfortunately, that would never happen. It would be like the bully and the nerds…the nerds would always win if they were united as a group…the bully turns out to be a small man behind a big pulpit…er…I mean facade.

I would really like to know just exactly how much money they have spent in trying to figure out what can or cannot be done with the Logo. As a member of City Bible and hopefully a soon to be member of City Business I think I can question what they spend their (my) tithes on. As an active member of City Bible I often see things that really make me wonder why more people do not question what is going on. Every time they want to put in a new elder they have a vote and get up and brag about the constitution of CBC and how they have to have a 90% approval to become and elder. Has any member ever asked to actually see the election results. I would be willing to bet that there a few A-holes who did not get this approval rating. Any way it seems like there should be a way to see what they are actually spending peoples tithes on.

If you want to start a fight with me, why don’t you do it face to face and (to put it in your terminology) like a man? What exactly have I done to make you hate me and bait me? And, what relevant direct question have you asked me that I refused to answer? Also, to my knowledge, there was no “gay” comment….unless, of course, you’re using “gay” as a blanket derogatory term, which I must say is both juvenile and profoundly un-Christ-like.
I am not here to say who’s a Christian and who’s a non-believer….like Queen Elizabeth I, I don’t have windows into people’s souls, and frankly, I don’t care. I happen to know the Bible, and I happen to know that many of you claim to believe that it’s the word of God. Therefore, when opinions are expressed that directly contradict this document that you claim to hold so dearly, I would think you’d appreciate it that someone comes along to point out the scriptures that contradict those opinions. If I’m accurate, then you have no reason to question who I back up and who I don’t….you say that the Word of God is a two-edged sword, and if so, it should be able to point out the truth of a thing for you, regardless of who’s quoting it, shouldn’t it? And if not, I don’t think you should be blaming me….you should be blaming yourselves for your lack of study and discernment.
As usual, you are more than welcome to email me privately if you’d like to know anything about me of a more personal nature. It’s not for me to disclose any of that here, but information is readily accessible to you if you’re willing to ask for it nicely….or even just look for it diligently. I’m not hiding anything from anyone….and it’s pretty ridiculous for you to post under someone else’s name in an attempt to be divisive, and then turn around and accuse me of not being straightforward. i’ve been so swamped at the bait store, I haven’t been able to check in; things are really cookin around here.
Well I’m bothered by the mud-fling, indicative of the social strata blogging. West Virginians must be taking a real liking to the site. (only a west virginian would holler “get out of the state”) The substantial majority of Americans are ignorant, so any how… All you white-trash bloggers SHUT UP. Do the world a favor and go on a YWAM d.t.s., thus “decreasing the surface population”.; get out of everyone’s hair; stay out of the adult talk.
Now you Mortons…you ought to disguise your identity; “any man would tell the truth if he had a mask to cover his face” Besides there’s no such thing as “it ain’t personal, it’s just business”. If you’re a person, it’s personal.
The logo thing is possibly the funniest, boldest, cleverest, *most dedicated move you boys have ever made. I’ve gotten umpteen cellphone minutes from distinguished callers, various departments and multiple clearance levels all over campus. From the pbc caf to the clamour of the foyer, everyone’s laughing about the ‘logo heist’.
I just want to say thank you for the entertainment. It’s always so much more enjoyable to watch a Super Bowl when you’re completely unbiased to the outcome. You appreciate the fireworks more, the cheerleaders more, the half-time show more, the commercials more, the commentators more.

Thank you for responding. For a minute there I thought I wouldn’t be able to blog again. I will see what I can do. But man I got to tell you, if you haven’t noticed, there are some heated, fired up people on this thing. I have expected to come home from work and see that there would be 100 comments. This topic has gone from the logo to a “sit down” to personal disgust. Man! Could you imagine if you got a dollar for every response. You would be the one buying the beer buddy!
And to the soldier that just came home. Brother, I have nothing but mad respect for you. You served our country and made it back alive. I have family in the millitary as well so your opinion will always count with me. But I need to correct you on something. I have NEVER come across as if my words were inspired by GOD. Pray tell - concerning the logo dispute, does CBC preach that the Bible is the infallible and inerrant word of God?
If so, what is CBC’s basis in scripture for claiming to own the logo? According to the scriptures, God owns the logo.
Does CBC claim to speak for God, or, does CBC sick lawyers on people on God’s behalf?

In response to this entire blog, especially Anon who is a little fired up: IT IS A JOKE!!!!! I doubt any of them would actually require real payment besides a beer and maybe a face to face meeting would help get things to the surface. Laugh People! If God has the sense of humor enough to make these charecters (catalyst and ref. pope) then he should have seen a blog coming.

Used to be people could post anonymously on the blog by just leaving the “Name” and “Email” fields blank - so ‘Anonymous’ is in fact many people and not just one user. JP and Catalyst suspended Anonymous posting several months ago to put an end to childish shenanigans and abuse. I think it was the great butter-bean debate that drove them to it …
With that said, keep an eye out for Henri and FICM - Henri’s been known to sneak up on newbies and give ‘em a wedgie while FICM picks their pocket.
