Dear City Bible: MSNBC called, they want their logo back

Posted on February 14th, 2006 by catalyst into the Lawsuits & Logo's category

We are still trying to find a way to post the letter from Davis Wright Tremaine. We will also be posting JP’s letter in response. However, it is proving to be a little more difficult than imagined. Nevertheless, the letter is coming… trust us, the letter is coming.

In the meantime, there were a couple of interesting comments I thought would make for a good post. One individual posted Romans 8:1 "There is no Condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus" and closed with this comment:

May you be lifted up from unprofitable endevors to the hights of knowing Christ and His love and proclaim and defend the gospel of Christ and His grace.

Which was followed by a comment from another elusive Anonymous:

I read the blog, I like a lot of it. I dislike a lot. But thanks to the Anonymous that post the thoughts about Christ and how lovely and wonderful He is. The new logo is so fitting for CBC. It’s not that they don’t love God or that they don’t love the things of God, they just make financial gain the first love, the first teaching , the first tithe……

I have never denied that City Bible does good. I have just always argued that what little good they do is overshadowed by the harm they cause to their members and to the Christian Community as a whole.

So let me ask, "Does City Bible’s good outweigh their harm? Does CBC do so much good that we should not point out the flaws in their preaching and actions?"

I feel that any organized religion that claims to know the complete “truth” is more harmful than good.
I remember as a child being told,”Just imagine if there was no religion, no police, no safety, no jobs, total chaos. This is what it would be like if there were no christians.”
I remember being so frightened at a young age that I would have nightmares that the heathens had taken over or something.
It’s weird that I think of this now because at this stage in history, the two largest religions in the world are battleing each other on the news everyday with guns, bombs and misinformation.

    Agreed.

Jesus answered that question in Revelation 2-3. He spoke to churches, not individuals. He always began the message with a description of Himself that was pertinent to them. Then He praised them for the good things they did. For six of the seven churches, He then pointed out something that needed correction, with a warning of what would happen if they did not repent. And then He finished His message with a promise for those who overcame.

So, no. The good does not outweigh the harm. The little bit of leaven makes the whole loaf rise. (catchy meter — maybe I could make a song).

First of all Anna. I’d like to say how interesting it is that when I open your link to the Bible vs above that the first thing that I see is a pop-up blasting the screen with advertising for those Kirk Cameron movies. I think this explains alot and I’ll leave that at that.

Secondly Anna, there are alot more than 7 churches in existence right now… maybe I’M BAD AT COUNTING.

“So, no. The good does not outweigh the harm.”

What does this mean? Are we baking cakes here?

    Your gonna have to clarify.

All I know is that the people in power in most of the world are tied to religion or get alot of their power via the followers of religion. Therefore, they need to be held responsible. I guess we could sit here and let god work it out, but since we don’t know who he is, and he’s got such a funny sense of humor, (kill your son Abraham) sounds like a meth binge to me, we may just want to try to get to the bottom of this.

I don’t feel relieved by your insight into that verse Anna.

A little tithe buys everyone a latte.

    completely strange

I need to take these pills and say my prayers.

    Ciao

    Dear Ciao
When I opened Anna’s link I saw no such pop-ups. Perhaps you should hire a professional to assist you with your computer?

    Dear Anon,

I didn’t put a link in at all. I think the blog program does that with all Scripture references.

I don’t understand your statement about the number of churches. At the time of John’s writing, there were a lot more than 7 churches, but the Lord Jesus instructed John to write to only 7.

I believe that when we look at what the Lord told those 7, we can hear Him speaking to us about the same spiritual things. My point was that no matter how many good things they did, the sin that was allowed to operate in them would bring about their fall.

The reference to “leaven” was from Jesus. He used “leaven” as a picture of sin — a little bit affects the whole thing. Which restates my point.

There is a problem with religion. Religion is believing an idea. There is a big difference between religion and a relationship with the Lord of all creation. And yes, we can know who God is. That is the reason Jesus came to earth.

Relationship with God is only possible when sin is removed, and the only way that can happen is through the Cross. Again, that is the reason Jesus came to earth.

When the Lord Jesus looked at the 7 churches just a few years after He ascended to heaven, He saw that most had compromised and allowed sin to grow (like yeast in the bread dough). It affected their relationship with Him.

Back to CBC: Perhaps they do not recognize their change of focus as sin. Maybe they don’t see that their desire for things (even good things such as harvest, blessing, anointing and power) has overtaken their desire for God and Him alone. It could be that in their zeal for what they want, they have chosen to overlook things and allowed personal sin to go unchallenged by the Cross.

In an irreverent way, this blog points out some of those things. I hope that there will be some humility on the part of CBC leaders to see if the things spoken here bear some truth, and talk to the Lord about it. Better to take a hint from a bunch of disgruntled TCHS students than to get a letter from the Apostle John or the prophet Jeremiah! Whew, that would be scary!

Of course, that would require that they read what’s written here. I think they do, eh?

Did you know Hitler was a decorated war veteran? Does that overshadow the harm he did? I think not. When someone starts a blog about a church and makes as much of a stir as this one does, you’d better sit up and take notice that something might be wrong in that church. Oh…and they need a lawyer to protect them because God no longer does.
