Verse of the Day (James 4:2)

Posted on May 15th, 2006 by Reformed Pope into the Scriptures category

 James 4:2

…You do not have, because you do not ask God.

Ahhh, I love this scripture. How often have we heard this. It's good to get a reminder every now and again that we need to have faith and ask God for the things we want.

I wonder if the rest of the book of James is as interesting. I think I'll read on…

Wait a minute. What's this in verse 3? No, it can't be…

3When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

Is this really saying that we can't just ask for anything we want? Our motives have to be right as well? This is ridiculous.

I'm cutting that verse out of my Bible.

no need to cut verse 3 out. just continue to preach verse 2 out of context. isn’t that the modern church way?

You ask and receive not: because you ask amiss, that you may consume it on your concupiscences. (James 4:3 DRB)

I asked for amiss and now she’s my misses.

But what on earth is “concupiscences”?

I think what verse 3 means is when you pray for God to send you a Benz you shouldn’t just ask for an S-Class because that would be placing a limit on God, hence you are praying with wrong motives. Go ahead and ask for the Maybach.

Maybe they could start giving away iPods? I might go back to church for an iPod. But only one service. Sort of like a time-share presentation…

azcentral.com: Church gives away iPods to draw new members

IPod Shuffle giveaways have been used to lure people to open bank accounts and buy cars and as bait by online hucksters. Well, now even churches are getting in on the craze.

Leaders of the Interfaith Unity Church, 1731 W. Baseline Road in Mesa, are hoping to capitalize on the gadget’s popularity and entice people to try out their 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.

“What we really want to do is we want people to know that we want them to come, we want them to possibly shuffle in and soar out,” the Rev. Julianne Lewis said. Lewis said whether someone wins the Shuffle or not, she hopes the church’s message sticks with people and they continue to come back after the promotion ends June 11.

To win the iPod Shuffle you must be a congregation member at least 14 years old who also has a parent that is a member. If you’re a guest of the church, you must be at least 18 years old. You must be present at the time of the drawing, and one winner per household.

At my last church (a CBC outreach) we advertised a kid’s bicycle drawing for any new visitors. The visitors came, won their bicycles, and never returned. Good for them.

Forget verse 3, just keep chanting the prayer of Jabez as your mantra and you’ll twist God’s arm by using his own scriptures against him.

Hey, it almost worked for Ben & Matt in Dogma!!

Hmmm. Yes… What a conundrum. On the one hand, cutting out the verses we don’t like can be so much fun. On the other, actual, genuine, spiritual growth hurts like a mother. Which way to go? Which way to go?
