Posted on August 30th, 2006 by catalyst into the Uncategorized categoryI just found a blog by a man who is considering accepting a leadership position at City Bible's Vancouver Campus.
Here's what he has to say:
City Bible Church is in the process of setting up a third campus in Vancouver Washington, just across the border from Portland. I have felt drawn to become involved with this campus for some time now. It turns out that my new employer is one of the key players in making this happen. It also turns out that my mentor Jack Louman is going to be the Executive Pastor in charge of this campus as well. I actually did not know this at the time I made the decision to take this job.
The blogger continues:
Jack has told me a number of times that he feels that God is calling me to take on a leadership role a City Bible Church. I found out friday that they need about 100 leaders right away (beginning in January) because even though it is a brand new campus there are already about 1,000 people that have expressed their desire to be a part of that congregation right away. My new employer is one of these pastors.
Who knows how much of this is actually true. But it sounds like the Vancouver Campus is getting off to a good start.

I love the fact that he was finally allowed to pray for people asking for prayer.
Good job buddy, how hard did you have to work to earn that honor?

It bothers me that he is basing his job acceptance criteria on his involvment with the new Vancouver Campus. Additionaly, he is mistaken in thinking he’s going to get out of Oregon state income tax because he lives in Portland but works in Vancouver. And why would he go to the Vancouver campus if he lives in Tigard? That makes no sense at all.

FICM, the way I read it, it seems to suggest that Mr. Slowdancer is accepting a new job located in Vancouver, and is ALSO being called to participate in leadership at CBC’s new campus. Thus, he would actually be getting away from OR employment tax through his new day job.
A couple comments popped into my head while reading the blog and other comments made so far though.
First…
Does this sound “borg’ish” to anyone else? Whew! Good thing this guy has Jack to tell him what God wants for his life.
Second…
Why…cause they have numbers? Too many churches measure success by attendance. Let’s not get caught up in it here too!
The Vancouver Campus will get off to a good start if they seek God’s Will and find ways to affect the Vancouver community for His purpose. Unfortunately, it looks like the “start” they’re off to is finding another big building, looking to pass the financial burden on members, and increasing ice skate rentals fees by $2!

Maybe B.T. Beauty you have a chance.
Why does this guy have two pages and why does he have a slight resemblence to John Karr? Kind of Creepy

GraySheep, Oregon requires residents to pay income tax regardless of their source of income. If you live out of state and get income from Oregon, you still pay their income tax. My point was that if he’s taking this job to be involved in the new campus, every other common sense reason is pointing the other way: taxes, commute, he lives near the CBC West campus, etc. He should move to Vancouver and save himself multiple headaches. Maybe this job is the right thing for him, it just bothered me how much stress he put on Louman’s pressure to switch campuses when he has no current involvement in the Vancouver community.
I looked up the web site for this new employer, Team Benton. It finally clicked in my head: this is Daryl Benton’s mortgage company. I’ve known the guy for a long time, he’s a good egg and has been involved in CBC for as long as I can remember. I think he even helped my parents refinance their house. Slowdancer will probably do OK working for him.
