Surfing for Something

Posted on September 12th, 2006 by catalyst into the Uncategorized category

Locutus sends in this link about a guy who finds a Higher Conscious while surfing. And surfing ends up saving his life.

The surfer also offers this anecdote about growing up Jewish:

Did you grow up with any kind of religious life?

I grew up in a Conservative Jewish household. I remember — hopefully, my mother will never see this article — at one point asking my mother why she was lighting the Shabbat candles. I was probably 8 or 9 years old at the time. And she said, "It's just what we do." And I was like, "Well, what do those prayers mean?" And she said, "Well, they are the blessings of the candles." And I was like: "Well, why do we bless the candles? What does it mean? Why does God care if we bless the candles or don't bless the candles? What does any of this mean?" And there were no answers. The answer was: This is what my parents did, and this is the tradition. And I never bought that.

Maybe I missed something, but as I read the interview with this guy he seems to say he found “a higher consciousness” while surfing. I didn’t see anything about finding Christ in there, but maybe I stopped reading too soon.

Yeah, I think you’re right. I saw that his book mentioned Jesus, so I kind of assumed he found Christ, but in more closely reading the article… he doesn’t seem to say that.
