Judah says ‘God a Dawg Fan’
Posted on September 28th, 2006 by Samaritan into the The City Church categoryIn his sermon The Way of the Water Pot on the Generation Church web site, Judah proclaims:
Hey the Huskies are 2 and 1, football. Come on; TWO and ONE! Did you notice that AFTER Sean came to GC, the Lord just anointed him; got almost 100 yards and a touchdown. I told him I said "Sean you just keep comin' to GC the Lord's just gonna keep blessin' ya."
Ducks (3 and 0) fans better pray that the whole Dawg-gone bunch of 'em don't start going to GC, or the Ducks are screwed! There's no defense that'll stop an anointed and blessed football team. ![]()
Margin Note: If Jonah is having so much fun, why does his voice still crack like that? A guy having that much fun ought to sound like Barry White.

What happens if the Beavers or Ducks go to CBC before the UW game? Will the blessings cancel out or will there be so much anointing on the field that the stadium explodes?

A battle of the Generaton Churches…
Who wants to set the odds?

Did you hear the sermon Judah did at Young Professionals? When someone told him they were praying for Osama Bin Laden to get saved, he told them he was praying for Osama to be killed…..I’m still trying to understand what that has to do with the topic of discipleship he was preaching on.

I know for a fact that God has NOT been a Husky fan since 1991 when Don James was coach and Steve Entman was stomping guys into the turf and they went TWELVE and OH! for the National Championship.
Where the formula is “blessed/anointed = winning football team”, it’s clear that the Huskies have been on God’s shit-list for about 15 years now!

Reminds me - I need a new Dawgs hat - the one I been wearing to do yard work for the last 7 years is about falling apart. The new ones look dorky. But I’ll be darned if I’ll wear an Illinois hat. They just got a big “I” on the brim. First time I saw one after moving here, on some guy shopping in Walmart, I looked at him and said “shouldn’t that say “ME”?” I tell ya, these farmers got no sense of humor.
BTW, I don’t think God ‘anoints’ people to score touchdowns. Endzone prayers, the sign of the cross, the John 3:16 guy with the rainbow hair, are all ridiculous. I do think God enjoys watching us have fun, maybe even ‘blesses the work of our hands’ - but the whole ‘God as good luck charm’ thing that comes across in team prayers, etc., really bugs me. Judah’s remarks suggest that God plays favorites - I don’t think so. Don’t them charismatic preachers like to quote: “God is not a respecter of persons”? How then is it that God ‘anoints’ someone just for going to Judah’s church meeting?
Hey Free at Last and TCRefugee - I got a new game for you to play at church. Listen for contradictions - see who can count the most. One of my favorites is the pastor who says “The Church IS PEOPLE!” and then in the next sentence refers to the buiding as the church. Well, which is it? It’s not both! Or the pastor who talks about giving as led by the Spirit, but then calls for the tithe, which is compulsory.
The one with the most contradictions wins.

hehe. Thanks Jack. I’ll keep that in mind if I get bored. So far we haven’t had to hear that kind of rethoric where we go now.
Do I detect you hurling when you read stuff we’ve said on the normal church we found? I don’t blame you if it makes you guys gag when we go on and on about the new church. It’s just we’d never seen something like this before and were amazed it exists. In light of the former church world, we’re happy there is a way to be a church that is relevant and non-consuming.
Don’t worry, we are keeping our distance, out of necessity, because we don’t want to repeat what we’ve done in the past and that’s to worship a leadership person(s) and default to their way of thinking…
We like Bob and it’s been a healing to us to listen to a regular guy talk about the love and life of God. But it stops there. We know he’s not perfect. AND we aren’t looking for perfect.
This blog has helped us discover that what we thought was our former church’s problem of dysfunction isn’t limited to them. Alot of it is common to MFI so an MFI problem. Finding a church outside that realm helps prove that and that’s another reason why we went on and on: to give examples of health and common sense and normalcy.

Great explanation TCR –we often say that church is absolutely the only place we could tolerate because anything that even smells of religiousness or our former life is repugnant –so hope that other people can find somewhere good in whatever form or style -just some other believers to meet or talk to that is healing. You obviously have that pastor’s heart Jack if its okay to say so and we appreciate you and your voice on this blog it adds alot. The humor is what is sustaining us –so don’t think we’re ‘religious nuts’ please –we’re doing all we can to change our m.o. and this is a good place to start. hope our story can help ‘uncover wierdness’ out there for someone else.

It’s not.
I saw what Unscrupulous said the other day.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:04 pm
It’s okay. Unscupulous’s anti religiousness makes us laugh!
By the way one element TCR and I forgot to add is that we were told for years that the church we now attend wasn’t deep -but shallow –so just by attending there and seeing fruit we feel freedom –but it came in stages of feeling
like idiots –embarassed –how could we be so naive—guilty–lets just hide
in the back–to maybe they are laughing at all of us who thought we were better–no one is more surprised at how all this has turned out than we were .
We do worry about those who leave and never figure out what was wrong -missing -for they are ripe to get into one more group that is off and may abuse.
I like to use the Tower of Pisa analogy –you start to lean more and more as you climb to the top of the tower and then you somehow get used to how it is leaning–convincing yourself ‘no this is straight’ Then when you get out and walk into a building that really is straight, you realize just how many degrees off you were.

I thought it was Pizza.
Good analogy, by the way.
My measure of a church, is the 1 Cor. 14:26 rule; am I free to stand up in the assembly of the saints and share the portion / revelation that the Messiah has given me by he Holy Spirit? It’s not a case of submit your requirest for a 3 minute ’slot’ in the church programme, to the church staff who will try to squeeze you in weeks even months from the date of your request IF it’s approved; in my view, it’s a case of ‘now’ - in real time- can I share my portion now as the Spirit is moving within me, or, does the tradition / format of the church restrict my freedom to share?
For me, Free, church looks a LOT more like sitting down to supper at a banquet table (breaking bread in what Jude calls a ‘love feast’) than it does an assembly auditorium style in pews.
There are some I’m sure I could attend and be blessed to be around my brothers and sisters, to sing with the congregation and be encouraged by what is presented, but in the end, I would feel somewhat devalued because it provides no opportunity for me to share the Christ within me. And there is no format for me to voice my objection to what is presented that is in error, if the spirit of discernment should move within me. Who can question the guy on the stage?
1 Corinthians 14:26 and 14:39, 1 Thessalonians 5:11 and 5:19-21, are just a few of the scriptures I cling to as defining a proper assembly, where the Sons are truly free (Matthew 17:26) to be Sons fully.
Guess that I think ‘institutions’, in as much as they establish extra-Biblical rules of order, traditions and practices that constrain the movement of the Spirit through the Sons (or saints, if you will), are evil.
But that’s just me - because I feel constrained/oppressed there; in fact, the thing that led me out of the institutions was being reduced to functionary, being silenced, having to seek the permission of men to do or say something as if the leading of the Holy Spirit wasn’t sufficient. The Lord had to lead me out of the institution completely, with what He wanted to accomplish in me, and for the work He had for me to do. No doubt I’m hyper-sensitive to some of this stuff.

Can relate to that completely and we’ve often wondered how long we’d have to endure the hyper-sensitivity that sometimes feels like an emotional disorder. Just the other day I was invited to help a worship team at a retreat and I started to sweat and I managed to eek out the question “did you say retreat?” — i mean the thought of being in close proximity to a group of Christians for more than a few hours still freaks me out.
I like the banquet idea and if it could work without pandamonium, it’d be great. (which isn’t so bad if you look at it like ‘this beautiful mess’). Human nature being what it is, though, eventually someone always rises to ‘the top’ and the strongest end up leading things, the most eloquent get to speak or sing and the squeeky wheel gets the grease.
A lot of the churches that exist today were born out of Jesus freaks beginning in the banquet style. The sad thing is over time they’ve slowly conformed to current christian culture where dress codes and preaching styles seem to originate in Dallas and the only glimpse of their early days are the pictures we all laugh over at Christmas.

Thank -you –you know where it was born. Having gone up to the real
Tower of Pisa, it is the best way to describe what happpened to us.
It was also extremely subtle– deceptively so. The higher you climbed the more you leaned……..

Looks like the Dawgs anointing turned into an an oinking.
Ducks 34, Dawgs 14.
Let’s not forget:
Beavs 27, Dawgs 17.
Either Luke stopped coming to GC, or Judah is full of it. How much you wanna bet if Judah was in Portland, it would be the Ducks and Beavs who were anointed?
Hmmm …
November 5th, 2006 at 9:36 am
Jonathan Stewart’s cadre is having more fun that Luke’s cadre.
November 5th, 2006 at 9:52 am
Accountability can be a real bitch.
Cadre leader: “What happened out there Luke … your anointing has departed … did you forget to tithe, again?!?” Grrrr …
Luke: “No! The Ducks just heard Dougie preach Timing is Everyting and we just seemed off all day long …”
Cadre leader: “I see. So it really comes down to Dougie vs. Judah, and whoever preaches the better sermon that week.”
Luke: “Excactly.”
Cadre leader: “I’m surprised you guys aren’t OH and NINE.”

Looks like Luke went to GC again …

Washington (4-7): 3

It’s the curse of Jonah Smith.
Seriously Luke, stay away from the City Church, the Huskies desparately need a win.
