YouTube Roundup
Posted on January 9th, 2007 by catalyst into the Other Blogs categoryHere are a couple of videos sent in by readers of the blog:
The first video describes Heaven, if Heaven was set in an Office.
The second video is several clips of Benny Hinn slaying people in the spirit, set to the tune of Bodies by Drowning Pool. I'm not sure whether the video is making fun of Benny or honoring him. But either way, it's Hinn in all his glory and power. And it's more than a little creepy.

Hinn always reminds me of the hypnotist shows that colleges bring in. Nothing is funnier than susceptible teenagers subconsciously acting like idiots!

Dude. I was hypnotized. I don’t care what you say. I mean, in the back of my head I knew what I was doing was crazy. But still he convinced me my nose was stretchy.
Which is also why I was called “Stretchy Nose Boy” the rest of my time in college.

I’d like to think there was a time during the “Renewal Movement” in which the Holy Spirit had a genuine influence in people’s lives. I think God used some unusual means to break down the religious edifice of the church. People who had never laughed or cried in church were suddenly doing so and realizing it was OK to be human as a Christian.
Sadly, Religion took over again and the whole thing has become such a farce that the world can’t help but mock guys like Benny Hinn for his eccentric behavior and theatrics.
CBC fell into this trap as well. Yelling, pushing, falling down, prayer tunnels, etc. The last straw for me was when they were praying over rocks.
I recently saw the movie “Borat”. It’s a movie where everyone is bound to be offended at some point, but you can’t help but laugh because the people in the story are just being themselves and it doesn’t require much parody to see how ridiculous people can be. The most uncomfortable moment for me was not the naked wrestling match - no! - it was the charismatic church service in Texas. Borat didn’t have to do anything outrageous, they simply filmed a church service with people yelling in tongues, running around in circles, doing the Hebrew Hop, and knocking each other over and shouting a bunch of Christianese. I was truly embarrassed and wanted to crawl under my seat because I understood finally just how awful “church” must appear to a lot of people. After the movie, my friend asked me if my church was ever like that. She grew up Catholic but she’s aware of my background. I fibbed and said it never got quite that bad. The truth was, it was probably worse and I was ashamed to admit I had been a part of it.
I couldn’t help but think of 1 Cor. 14:

Apparently, Benny Hinn is a very popular topic for youtube submitters.

Dude? Now there’s a interesting way to begin your post about being hypnotized, Cat, since as I recall the hypnotist tied your nose to some other dude’s the the two of you did all you could to stop from kissing each other. Good times, good times…

Wow! Who here has ever hit the floor? And people give money to this guy, I mean like 10% or more. Maybe somebody should let these poor sheep know you can by a 40 of malt liquer for $2 bucks and get the same result.

That was totally beyond creepy. No wonder non-Christians think that Christians are weird. I would think Christians are weird. And I know that the argument will inevitably come up that the Holy Spirit isn’t supposed make sense. That we’re not supposed to fit in, being “in the world but not of the world” and all. But it’s supposed to be in a good, “there’s something different about that person” weird. Not a “get me the hell away from that person” weird.
On a totally different topic, I really liked the other video. I look forward to watching Episode 2.

I think it was the Renewal (Revival?) Conference of ‘99 or ‘00. It was during the time when CBC was big into spiritual warfare, prayer walks, using wooden stakes to mark spiritual territory, etc. During the lead up time to the conference there was a lot of hype about a previous revival in Portland. It was said that during that revival, the preacher who started or drove the revival movement was said to have been visited by an angel on Mt. Tabor. They had Mark Jones go up to the park up there along with a camera crew and videotaped some prayer services up there that mostly involved a lot of shouting the word “fire” and such. They brought the video back to the conference and people went nuts. Mark also brought back some rocks from the site believed to have been the place of the angelic visit. Well, you can imagine that with the recent trend of physical-spiritual symbolism and the hype of the conference that this sent people over the top. Even though they made the disclaimer that there was no inherent spiritual power in the rocks, they brought the rocks out on the stage and there was a rush of people trying to pray around or touch said rocks.
I remember thinking in that moment, “God, I don’t care about rocks. I want you to touch me.” I believe God answered that prayer, because soon after that I left CBC to begin my road to spiritual recovery from a lot of that religious nonsense.

Wow, super creepy, both of them.
Hinn has always creeped me out. I totally agreed with all of Hannah’s comments.
I do have to confess that I have, on a hand-ful of ocassions, been “slain in the spirit.” I never did any weird stuff like barking or rolling around, and I usually resisted falling over as long as possible, but I KNOW those experiences were REAL, and occurred after lengthy worship and prayer (which involved lots of “Lord, have your way,” and “Lord, please talk to me” prayers from my heart), and I could tell you today exactly what the Lord said to me and showed me during those times. ALL of those experiences were BEFORE BT/CBC decided that the “renewal” was legit. I distinctly remember Frank speaking AGAINST the “renewal” and its manifestations, the first half of 1994 (such vanity, assuming they should take a position on every little thing and assuming people care what they think). Some of my friends and I were attending special services at a different church, hearing from God, enjoying great worship and these “experiences,” and CBC was PISSED about that. We took lots of grief for that. Anyway, later that year, something must have changed the CBC leadership’s mind, because suddenly it seemed the renewal was all their idea.
Anyway, years ago, before I’d even heard of BT/CBC/MFI, I had some intense spiritual experiences, always in small groups rather than in large church services.
So, the Lord does touch people in powerful ways. But too many people make freak shows of it and seek the manifestations instead of the source of them.
What kills me is how freaky Hinn is and how insane his meetings look, especially to unbelievers.

Dont forget Cindy Jacobs (think it was her deal) and the hankies…. something about they got a bunch of hankies and had someone pray over them and then they did something… help me out …

LL - was the whole “hankies” thing a lame attempt to replicate that scripture about Paul?

I am admitting I went to a Benny Hinn Performance in Seattle. Harold Leggett had wanted us to go. He took our son David on stage and Benny Hinn prayed for him. (David is Spina Bifida & Autisic). Harold went down in the spirit. Benny Hinn had David take off his braces and walk around the stage as if healed. (David can walk without braces, his ankles are weak and he cannot flex his feet to step properly). Benny Hinn proclaimed a miracle! I was ill at what I saw!
Harold later forced his way to Benny Hinn as he was leaving the building. He asked to be prayed over to be healed of HIV. He went down in the “spirit”.
I am serious… Even Benny Hinn looked strangly at him.
This is a part of my life a still cringe at! I knew better but did not say anything in opposition.
We still have on VHS tape the whole incident! It was played on his TV program.

LoveMyLab,
Wow, how awful, to have your son used by Benny Hinn like that. How old was David when this happened? I’m just curious if he remembers and, if so, how he feels about it.
I love how you (aptly) refer to it as a “Performance.”

LoveMyLab,
Benny Hinn came to the Tacoma dome the fall of 1995 as I recall. Was that the one?
