Homeless
Posted on January 11th, 2007 by catalyst into the City Boobie Church categoryReforming Heathen makes an obversvation:
The number of homeless people in Oregon stands at 16,221, in Washington it's 23,970.
A total of 744,000 people are homeless in the United States.
One wonders how much effort is being put forth by the mega-churches headquartered in these states to end this problem?
Or are they too busy spending $1,400,000 on a townhouse in Washington, D.C.? (Will they welcome the homeless persons there?)

The number of homeless people around Portland is appalling. You can’t leave a grocery store and not be accousted by 2-3 asking for money, or someone walking up to you on the street who just got out of prison as recently happened to me there.
It’s like there are 2 difference cities –the shining one up on the hill
and the real one where people who have actual problems live.
Never the two will meet unless you quit having ‘business conferences.’
When I went to the Intercessor’s Conference I was never even made aware
there was a downtown Portland let alone the Pearl District or how about
the people who live under the bridges?
Oh well out of sight –out of mind.

Most megachurches are conveniently located in suburbs which may make it easier to avoid downtown homelessness. However, that’s not to say that all megachurches don’t address the issue or that homelessness/hunger is not an issue in the suburbs — especially at any highway off ramp. But I don’t often see soup kitchens or shelters operating out of megachurches.
