Green Christianity

Posted on January 16th, 2007 by catalyst into the Green Christians category

From longtime reader, first time poster FICM:

You've posted in the past about the controversy of Creationism vs. Evolution. This story is about how evangelicals are putting those differences aside to join scientists in fighting global warming. Finally, something positive from the Christian community regarding science!

Key quotes:

"Whether God created the Earth in a millisecond or whether it evolved over billions of years, the issue we agree on is that it needs to be cared for today," said Rich Cizik, vice president of government relations for the National Association of Evangelicals, which represents 45,000 churches.

Speakers at the Wednesday announcement will include megachurch pastor Joel Hunter, who refused to take the leadership of Christian Coalition of America because the organization wouldn't let him expand its agenda to include the environment and poverty.

I agree with FICM. It's good to see a Christian organization taking the lead on preserving our environment. What took them so long?

Back in the 80’s, when Francis Schaeffer was writing so prolificly, one of his books was titled “Pollution and the Death of Man.” It was a wonderful book, and it created a strong desire within me to preserve our planet as well.

I don’t know if global warming is man caused, but I know man is hugely responsible for polluting the air, the land, and the water, and these are enough concerns for me to align myself with Green Christianity.

While it’s great conservative Christians are finally taking the stand for the environment, there is already division among conservative Christian environmentalists regarding global warming.

According to an article today, the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance counters Cizik’s environmental movement. While they claim to uphold conservation, most of the articles seem to be slanted toward opposing global warming warnings, secular environmentalism, environmental regulations, and opposition to genetically modified foods. In other words, Christian environmentalists who seek to maintain the status quo and advocate humanity’s God-given dominion over nature.

    * “interfaith” meaning conservative/fundamentalist protestant Christians and a token conservative Jew only
