American Idol Contestant gets kicked out of Bob Jones
Posted on March 30th, 2007 by catalyst into the Things Dougie wouldn't do categoryI'm a huge American Idol fan, and have been voting non-stop for my boy Sanjaya. (The pony-tail mo-hawk killed me.)
But in other AI news, I ran across this interesting tidbit about contestant Chris Sligh. Evidently, he is a worship leader at his church and was recently kicked out of Bob Jones University.
Sligh also talked to the News about being kicked out of the Christian fundamentalist college, Bob Jones University, for attending a contemporary Christian concert featuring the group 4Him.
He enrolled at another Christian school, North Greenville University, and is three credits shy of a music degree.
Leaving Bob Jones "was actually good, because I had been trying to figure out how to leave," he said.
What!?! Sligh was kicked out of BJU for going to a 4Him concert! I didn't know there were people who admitted to being 4Him fans, let alone go to their concerts. But wow! And I thought Temple Christian High School was lame.

Haha. Yeah, I was only kind of joking there. I’m actually a big fan of 4Him.

The Sanjaya conspiracy is alive and well. I think it is both hilarious and disappointing that he has lasted so long.
I read an article on him somewhere where Chris was only allowed to listen to classical music growing up. (Someone explain to me then how modern church music qualifies in this category.) Talk about repression.
I really feel for Chris. He seems to be sincere and eager to do music with a spiritual message, but in his growing up I think he has begun to realize how confining it is to do so within the framework of traditional churches. I can relate to the struggle of rejecting the BS of the Christian format yet still wanting to retain the idea of having an impact within it. In the end, I had to get out, and I don’t regret it. I think AI has been a huge eye-opener for him, that he can do music outside of the church, and be successful without compromising his values. At least that’s what I hope he finds.
On a related note, I noticed that after decades of history within BT & CBC of NEVER allowing Christian bands to play within the church doors, they are finally opening up the church as a venue for Delirious and Rebecca St. James. I wonder what finally changed their minds?

I fully support Chris . A church leader should not have complete control over what you listen to or attend. If it is wrong for you, in your heart, you will know it. God has his plan for Chris. I’m glad he can be in his fellowship again. He is a wonderful singer and will be a great recording artist as long as he is walking with Jesus. God bless you, Chris, and Rock On!

“What!?! Sligh was kicked out of BJU for going to a 4Him concert!”
Maybe it was for listening to crappy music.
“I wonder what finally changed their minds?”
Hillsong does it.
