Your Papers Please

Posted on April 23rd, 2007 by Samaritan into the Uncategorized category

It seems we have a college educated teacher pontificating on our fine blog, who asserts a persons age, education, profession, etc., establishes credibility.

So, since we're trying to be a "credible" blog and not just a silly parody blog, you're going to have to show me, Cat and RP your papers before you can post here. (JK  )  Henri, enable the "credibility filters" (aka "BS filters"), would you please?

I'll start. I retired from engineering operations at the Boeing company following a career in aerospace, supporting a variety of projects such as (this is for schnitzel who seems to relish acronyms) AWACS /E3A, IUS , ALCM , PHM, GSRS, ISSA , MX, etc.  (I linked a few of the more interesting ones).

Of course, I've learned that Paul was absolutely right when after he cited his impeccable credentials as a card-carrying jew, he considered them all to be "dung" compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus.

Oh, and it's because I'm retired that I'm home reading this blog. That doesn't mean I don't work now - I fix houses - play with my grandkids - you know - old guy stuff.

Anyhow, (in my best Sgt. Schultz voice) "Your papers please!"

Sam

The BS filter was already installed last year. looks like I may have accidently reversed the connections, though. Sorry about that.

With regard to my papers, I’m a licensed priest. Only cost me $5 from an online vendor. I have an official certificate and everything.

And before someone screams “There’s nothing funny about Nazi’s and racism” you can read about John Banner, the actor who portrayed Schultz who was a Jew and a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp.

    Banner quote:

“There is no such thing as a cuddly Nazi. Maybe Goering was cuddly to his wife. He wasn’t cuddly to the city of Rotterdam. Schultz is not a Nazi. I see Schultz as the representative of some kind of goodness in any generation.”

Hmmm I guess we’re not allowed to link images - I suppose that could be abused. (It was a picture of Sgt. Schultz.)

I attended college and moved to a different city to do it. Not far from CBC, about 1.5 hours away — but far enough away that it didn’t make sense a lot of times for me to come “home” for the weekends and for church.

The entire time I was in college I never — I repeat: NEVER felt any kind of support from any leader, minister, pastor, what have you. I remember specifically one night after GenChurch (a random night in the early years of college that I was able to be there), and P. Dougie asked me what I was doing. I told him where I was going to school and he simply stared blankly at me. Not kidding — no words came out of his mouth. Just a blank and awkward stare.
A friend of mine was standing there with us and he then turned to her to aske her what she was doing. She said that she was *thinking* about going to PBC. He immediately begin gushing about how wonderful that was and how great for her.
This hurt my feelings and I felt very discouraged for the obvious reasons. A few years before this P. Dougie had discouraged me from going to PBC. He had said that unless I felt really called to go there, I should not.

About a year ago I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in a while in the bathroom at church. I had graduated at this point and she was nearing the end of her schooling. I hadn’t seen her in a while and she was amazing — she had grown into this woman who was confident, smart, witty. I could tell that her experience at school had taken her to a good place in her life.

My point is this: I find it fascinating that CBC practically discourages a formal education. There are some exceptions to this but they are few and far between. I realize that it was in college that I learned to question, to reason, to think…and to allow those things to be involved in my faith. I am sure that is why they discourage it — they don’t want people to really evaluate what they believe. But it is my opinion that that only leads to people not *fully* believing. If you can’t reason and think about what you believe then you can’t truly believe it.

The only affirming, encouraging and positive things any adult ever said to me in regards to my education (besides my parents who, God LOVE them, supported me even when it hurt), was Terry Iverson. This happened near the end of when I was going to school and his genuine care and pride in me was so touching that I had to keep myself from breaking down in tears at the public function we were at.

I think it is very unfortunate that higher education is practically frowned upon in the church. It has enriched me in ways that complement every area of my life. I feel more whole as a person.

Sorry — if you want my “papers” I will give them. But I am 24 — almost 25 — and my papers don’t add up to much. :)

Not sure about Toronto but I know that during the Pensacola Revival they had 2 huge schools and the same type of thing happened. Alot of churches do this. We as Christians should cherish the fact that our kids are going on to a higher education, PERIOD!!

That’s no surprise, because they also don’t encourage you to think for yourself. It’s always been surprising that most pastors don’t encourage people to think for themselves when it comes to church issues and doctrine, they would rather tell you what to believe and have you just agree with them and pose them no problems. That is probably also why instead of really good bible exposition, most revert to eye candy. Just dumb us down and give us entertainment and pass the basket.

I remember taking a 300-level theology elective at the University of Washington, having just come from one year at PBC and thinking this was going to be a snap. Holy crap, I had no (zip, zilch, nada) ability to reason/expound on why I believed what I believed except “well, that’s just always the way I’ve heard it!”

Teaching critical thinking is risky, especially when it sometimes seems that the more we pursue wisdom the less we have the ability to maintain childlike faith, but ultimately, I agree with Just Thinking…if you can’t really evaluate why you believe what you believe, than you don’t really believe it.

And for what it’s worth…this is STILL an area I lack in and one of the BIG reasons I’ve enjoyed voices like Dave Mackin, Larry Taylor and Tom Sparks on this site! (come back, Tom) ;)

Tell your PBC advisor or Doug Lasit that you want to drop out of PBC so that you can get an accredited education at Multnomah School of the Bible and watch their reaction. Be sure to videotape it for us!
