Church Pork
Posted on May 13th, 2007 by catalyst into the Uncategorized categoryCould this be the real reason The City Church has purchased a rowhouse two blocks from the capitol?
A New York Times analysis shows that the number of earmarks for religious organizations, while small compared with the overall number, have increased sharply in recent years. From 1989 to January 2007, Congress approved almost 900 earmarks for religious groups, totaling more than $318 million, with more than half of them granted in the Congressional session that included the 2004 presidential election. By contrast, the same analysis showed fewer than 60 earmarks for faith-based groups in the Congressional session that covered 1997 and 1998.
So much for a balanced budget.

Acts 10, God said pork is okay.

Speaking of PORK… and totally off topic, General John “Blackjack” Pershing was fighting the Moros in the Phillipines. The Moros were devout Muslims. Pershing caught three spies one day. The spies were to be executed by firing squad the next morning.
Pershing had a trench dug and a herd of pigs driven into the trench. He ordered machine-gunners to open fire, killing the pigs in the trench. Pershing then had the three spies brought out for execution. Three stakes were positioned in front of the trench with the freshly-killed pigs in it. Pershing gave the order, and the rifle’s fired on two spies, who dropped, dead.
Pershing ordered the spies to be thrown into the trench with the pigs and buried.
Pershing ordered the third spy set free.
The Moros quit within 6 months.
We need a man like Pershing in Iraq.

Wow.
You seem to imply that “terrorist,” “Muslim terrorist,” “fanatical Muslim” and “devout Muslim” are all synonymous. This is a fallacy.
Being devout doesn’t make you fanatical, and not all religious fanatics are devout. Since you are referring to Iraq, and, therefore, we must assume you mean the “war” in Iraq, what makes you think that using the threat of pork would quash their civil war?
If anything, this blog should have taught you that religion can be just as much about politics and power as it is about faith. Counter-religious behavior is often justified or sanctioned in the service of a “greater cause”, otherwise you as a Christian wouldn’t be able to say “tie them to a stake and shoot them”, no?
I know that we try to avoid politics around here, but I really think you might be speaking out of ignorance here. After all, General John “Blackjack” Pershing was never in the Philippines in the early nineteen hundreds, but rather was one of the founders of the Civil Air Patrol.
Peace

I just don’t think the answer to solving the Iraq mess is MORE violence and torture.
The answer is getting the Sunni and Shiites to get along. But I don’t think we can do that. That’s up to them.

Thank you for the link RH, but I don’t get it. I see a Capitan John J. Pershing cited, but not a General John “Blackjack” Pershing. Are you saying they’re the same guy? I also don’t see anything about spies and pigs and stuff, but I might add that movie to my netfilcks queue anyway.
Hey I’m not trying to debate anything with you! If you’re more informed about American history than me, then I’m all ears!
(awwww I can’t resist… One little dig: I notice you seem to get upset when random City Church folk miss the point of your posts, but rather ignore your direct statements and instead dwell on other small details. Might that be what you’re doing to me here?)
Anyway, ignore me. I’ll go away.

I agree with Bill Maher’s definition of victory–”when young Muslim men stop wanting to kill us . . . and the Iraqi war is having the opposite effect.”

I don’t know about Pershing, but I did hear that the Israelis are hanging bags of pork parts in buses to prevent suicide bombers.
As for the row house in DC, City Church is just pursuing their Dominionism doctrine, and PF is claiming a part in the “grandfather” sense.

After Roman Emperor Constantine became a ‘christian’, he began to pay the salaries of the clergy. This, of course, kept them under his thumb.
We are in a different millenium now, but it seems like the same program to me.
I would prefer to see the ‘government upon His shoulders’ (Isa.9:7) in the church instead of on the president/congress.
