Which future New York City Pastor is still living in Portland Oregon because his home loan fell through for his house in NYC?
Which future New York City Pastor is still living in Portland Oregon because his home loan fell through for his house in NYC?
tch tch .. Does this mean God is not in this all… tis all being attempted on self-power?
Surprise surprise. I saw this coming months ago.
How did you get quick info?
Wow. The devil must really be worried about the impact the Senior Pastor Ed Schefter is going to have in NY!!!1
Jack Louman? Oh, that’s right, he’s not moving there.
Wouldn’t the church put up some kind of note guaranteeing x-income for x-months?
Or is Pastor X’s credit so poor that not even such a note from an upstanding organization can overcome it?
Well, if it doesn’t work out with the bank, there are alternatives.
Awesome link.
Perhaps they should have secured the loan before having their interns move out their first? Or is SPES too good to pay rent in NYC like the commoners?
While I may have my differences with the subject individual, it seems to me that revelling in said individuals misfortune is a bit beneath us.

I’m not revelling. I just think this entire endeavor is misdirected and should have been stopped in the very beginning. And I think this is God’s way of putting the breaks on a bad idea.
point taken
Although
“And I think this is God’s way of putting the breaks on a bad idea. ”
It is truly baffling that God would be more concerned with frustrating their ambitions than with say….oh i dont know…genocide.
I’d be curious to hear any theological rationalizations (I know, not exactly the right word) as to why that might be.
I don’t think it’s necessary to blame God for a lot of things, including SPES’s aspirations to bring
his pet musicala new church to NYC. We’ve discussed already how incredibly ludicrous this whole idea really is. I think natural causes are plenty to cause this thing to fail without having to point at a divine hand.Could it be that the move leadership to NY was annointed? Maybe so.
If you want some laughs, check out some of the ways that word was applied in the Old Testament. Then, ask if there was an “annointing” there.
According to some of these examples, I hope I never receive such an “annointing”.
I have never understood the true definition of that word. Can anybody help here. Or is this just another conundrum?
I thought you all might like to receive the facts about what really happened with his loan.
(1) there was no problem on his end concerning the loan.
(2) the person who processes the loan made a major mistake that put the brakes on the loan. It would have gone through eventually, but was held up.
(3) The loan company that would have loaned out the money went belly up. Had they commited to the loan, and not be able to back out, it would have been a major mess that could have delayed them for months. (Their money could have been held up in escrow while things were hashed out.)
I strongly believe that God’s hand was in it to delay the loan saving them much grief and lost months. Without the facts, it’s always easier to slam people. And if it’s in the form of satire, then it’s harmless right?
Yes, there was. He has no income, as he is starting a new church. And the days of lending large amounts of money to people with high FICO scores but no steady income are over.
Perhaps it wasn’t God that caused the loan to fall apart. I don’t know. Perhaps it was just the worldwide Credit Crunch that is making it more difficult for people to get a loan.
But anyone thinking logically and practically can see this is a bad idea. I really wish people would apply more common sense to their actions.
Doug Cotton has no income and is starting a City Church down here. Word is Wendell Smith is setting him up. Maybe your guy has backers also. Isnt’t this how all these MaFIa churches get started?
I’m not exactly an endorser of this church plant, since it will essentially re-create CBC in NYC, but I agree that we shouldn’t be rejoicing in the misfortuntes of others or trying to figure out whether the complication is from God or Satan. I don’t know anything about the loan for the NYC house falling through, but what I do know is that the sale of one of the five–or so–homes that Ed liquidated here in Portland fell through, and the purchase of the NYC house was contingent upon the sale of all of his investment properties–but not his own home, which still has not sold but is not holding up the move.
Whatever.
At least give me that perhaps this wasn’t very well thought through on the part of the pastor. And if he can’t even handle moving to NYC, than maybe he shouldn’t be starting up a church in NYC.
And if you’re going to feel sorry for someone you should feel sorry for all of his followers who actually managed to make it to NY but are now awaiting the arrival of their fearless leader.
Sounds like January or February of 1991 when Pastor Iverson asked the church to pray against satan and 1st National Bank for turning him down for a multimillion dollar loan to get building and moved up to Rocky Butte by September…
Satan?? could it have been GOD attempting to put the brakes on MAN’S plans??

living life:
You present an interesting thought here. So,take a look at what has happened to what once was a wonderful and God loving group of worshippers of the former church. We have all, by choice and God’s leading, been scattered to the four winds. Many of us still are being productive in serving in our Lord’s purposes in spreading the Gospel to
to world.
It is sad when we look back and see how “man’s” plans transitioned a church of God into an empty kingdom of men, or whatever you might assign to that cbc religious corporation.
But, what the heck, someone, or several, are making some good money there. (sinic, sinic)

I believe that leaders are often so full of their own importance that they think that when they propose a plan, it automatically MUST be of God rather than a product of their own imagination and machinations. Thus, when circumstances block that plan, it’s automatically “satan” trying to block it as opposed to the Lord trying to say “No…not THIS way, child….”.
This attitude reeks of irreverence of God’s sovereignty. Sometimes, when we’re moving in a direction that He doesn’t want, He frustrates those plans. After the person refuses to listen and keeps on and on, I get the feeling God says “fine… you can go your own way. Now reap the whirlwind.”
Certainly we are not to rejoice at the downfall of others. However is it alright to be relieved when the misguided plans of arrogant men, supposedly acting on the ” direction of God” are thwarted? Plans that will only perpetuate the damaging theological errors of CBC and MFI?
Dear stranded members of the New York City church,
I know what is like to get stranded somewhere by a church plant. If you are looking for somewhere to worship while waiting to see if your pastor shows up, I would suggest Sovereign Grace City Church in Brooklyn. I think that you will find it a refreshing alternative to what you have been accustomed to and may even find that you like it much better. Don’t let CBC or Ed play the “loyalty or covering” cards of guilt on you. God exists outside of CBC and MFI. http://www.sgcitychurch.org/.
CBC jumped on the “personal intercessor” bandwagon years ago. The original idea was to have chosen people who would pray for the leaders. The pray-ers of course were honored to be chosen. And the pray-ees had people doing the praying for them.
Being naive, I was so honored. It was great for awhile. Until I realized that I was being told what to pray for, and the pray-ees were not interested in what I heard from the Holy Spirit (as if it was irrelevant).
So anyway, I was praying for this one project where things were not going smoothly. And I heard the Lord say clear as day, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Oh great. I mean it’s great to hear from God. It’s not so great to deliver the message.
But anyway, it was a lesson that sometimes it is GOD who does the resisting, and if ever I feel resistance in my own life, it’s good to go to the Father and ask for an evaluation.

Thank you Anna…Precious words…..

+1
As usual
Thanks for the insight Anna. I was asked to be an intercessor, and I went to a class for it. During the training, I was told I HAD to be a TITHER in order to be involved. I never went to any more of the training. For awhile, I was torn about whether to do it or not, but I’m glad I did not.
Later, the Holy Spirit moved me into a mentoring friendship with a man who was a true shepard. I learned more from him in 2-3 years than I did at PBC/CBC in 20+.
Today is going to be an interesting day to be in NYC.
Wall Street is going crazy.
Did SPES arrive?
Ed is in NYC and has been. The rest of the family is still in Portland. The loan company went under, as someone mentioned earlier in this thread. Again, not a big fan of Ed, or of replicating CBC, but I’m trying to be careful to not rejoice in the obstacles faced by this family and team, and not to assume I know whether the obstacles come from God or from Satan. We all have faced our own obstacles and challenges, and have likely experienced Christians “reading into” those challenges for signs of sin, being out of God’s will, etc., and probably didn’t appreciate that much. Who knows whether God called the Schefters to NYC. I seriously doubt He called them to replicate CBC, since it’s so antithetical to Biblical Christianity, but God has his own purposes for doing things that we often can’t see until we’re well down a certain path. God can change me. He can change them. He loves them and has plans for them. I hope that God will change them in NYC for His good (and for the sake of NYC). Anyone with me?
Yep.

To the person that gave the web site http://www.sgcitychurch.org/.
Why is it that church web sites do not identify what city they are in? I’ve done many searches and many of the church sites do not give a hint. Sometimes they say the name of the city or town but not the state. They’re playing with us. Maybe they can’t get a big enough loan to add a couple words…

The directions show the church in Brooklyn, as in New York City. For some reason church web sites tend to assume people know what city they are in, and it’s pretty dumb. Poor contact info is one of my pet peeves regarding church web sites. At the very least you should have a physical address (most people suck at giving directions, let me google map it) and a mailing address, as well as a phone number where you can talk to a real person. I don’t know if it’s a conscious decision or just plain laziness, but if it’s the former I’d think twice about visiting a church that claimed to be about people but you can’t contact any real people unless you show up on Sunday.
I have friends who work in the mortgage industry. The loan company going under is fairly common in the last month, so it’s just unlucky on the part of SPES.
I’m with you, Anon. Let’s pray God changes them for the better. Let’s hope 3,000 miles is enough separation that they are able to listen to the Holy Spirit.
I agree.
And I also believe that this venture must fail. For it is in man’s failure, that God is truly glorified.
