Sierra Club Prayer Circle
Posted on August 8th, 2007 by catalyst into the Green Christians categoryThis warms my heart:
At 8 on a Saturday morning, just as the heat was permeating this sprawling Orlando suburb, Denise Kirsop donned a white plastic moon suit and began sorting through the trash produced by Northland Church.
She and several fellow parishioners picked apart the garbage to analyze exactly how much and what kind of waste their megachurch produces, looking for ways to reduce the congregation's contribution to global warming.
"I prayed about it, and God really revealed to me that I had a passion about creation," said Kirsop, who has since traded in her family's sport-utility vehicle for a hybrid Toyota Prius to help cut her greenhouse gas emissions. "Anything that draws me closer to God — and this does — increases my faith and helps my work for God."
Working for God by cleaning the environment. It's nice to see.

Definitely great to see… that horrible false-theology a lot of Christians have of “Its all gonna burn so we don’t need to take care of the world” is so absurd.
Well, I’m going to get in my Hummer now and go buy some disposable electronics at Best Buy.

I have a lot of kids.
Perhaps they could come pick through my trash — and maybe even take it out for me.
Seems that Dad and kids don’t take out the trash as much as Mom does!
Having the megachurch volunteers take out my trash would be great.
Besides, I don’t think I would look good in a moon suit!

how is it horribly absurd?
You saying that is the exact same as judah saying “shut up” to peoples Biblical arguments without giving a Biblical reply.

jb - I would love to hear your argument as to how you feel God approves of us destroying the earth.

wow, i wonder how long it will take the church lawyers to stop this pursuit? hopefully they’ve (the megachurch) invested in a mega shredder!
i must say this is the perfect opening scene to a film, (preferably indie yet destined to be picked up by one of the major players) on ‘uncovering the undercover scam’— innocent global warming enthusiast discovers revealing documents…
now that i think about it, isn’t this how Tilton’s money discrepancies were first discovered?
aside from all that~ not that there’s anything wrong with crusading for a cleaner planet or anything.
