Two Fundamentalist Christians go on a date…

…and hilarity ensues.

Once a week, The Washington Post Date Lab sets up singles in the DC area. And this week they picked conservative Christians, Megan and Timothy, delighting me to no end. These two managed to fulfill every possible cliche.  Her favorite book, The Case for Christ. His: The Bible.

Here is a wonderful sample of their date.

Megan: I was glad that he was Christian. But he does things that I don't do, like dancing and drinking and going to movies.

Timothy: It had come up that she graduated from Bob Jones University. People who graduate from Bob Jones are definitely more strict. If she's absolutely against dating someone who likes to go to the movies and have a beer every once in a while, I have to respect her views on that. [But] Jesus never hid from the secular world, and I don't think I'm going to Hell for watching "The Office."

Needless to say, it didn't work out.

This should be a case study on why some Christians can't get married.

  1. I’m a little apalled that they didn’t have a third party with them to complete the social unit.

Geez, these former (I assume) PBC students can’t seem to shake the old regs, can they? ;)

  2. Brings back fond memories (NOT) of dating a PBC student while attending Bible Temple. . . can’t really ever recall a fun time had by all.

I remember one guy who put his bible between us in the car and preached to me throughout the entire date.

  4. —drinking i can understand—

What about drinking can you understand? Jesus drank! Jesus drank with drinkers! Heck he drank with fishermen … They drank a lot! Jesus gave us the commandment to drink … He said do this in memory of me (him not me) … SO why can you understand any follower of Christ to ban drinking????? I could never get around this whole mythical bible mandate.

    Just wondering.

  5. i didnt say you cant drink, but some people take it too far, does jesus approve of people getting drunk? which is a direct result of drinking, its not wrong to drink but if you cant control yourself then just dont do it….im sure if you think hard enough you can think of someone who runied their life with alcohol…

so i can understand the womans concern about drinking…

Jesus did drink, when was he drunk?

And something seems just a little off in your perception of communion, you make it seem like “do this in remembrance of me” is to open a few beers with your buddies, and talk about it…

  6. Jesus did drink, when was he drunk?

I can’t say for sure if Jesus ever had too much to drink…but in looking at the wedding feast, I can guarantee that there were plenty of drunk people there. If you study these celebrations your bound to find that people liked their wine…and the reason Jesus had to perform this miracle is because they had drank all the wine available.

Why would Jesus make more wine (as a miracle no less) for a bunch of drunk wedding guests if He were so opposed to it?

I think the answer lies in the fact that no one had to drive home that night. You can crash your donkey all you want…and it is only going to hurt yourself.

  7. As resident “counsel”, I should state that the proprietors of this blog do not in any manner endorse or condone druken donkey rides. Well, they don’t endorse or condone it unless there is a very compelling reason.

  8. —-And something seems just a little off in your perception of communion, you make it seem like “do this in remembrance of me” is to open a few beers with your buddies, and talk about it…—-

My perception of communion is a little off? No really I believe that Jesus and the disciples did just that. I don’t know what your perception of communion is but mine is what History tells us it is: Passover!

The communion is not drinking a sip of grape juice and a cracker with 2000 people you don’t know, it is sitting down with 10 – 20 people you are close with and “breaking bread” or having a good meal and drinks and sharing your life with them. Communion is about getting to know people around you .. Yes Loving People! It should be up close and personal not a cracker and a sip of grape juice.

Jesus and the disciples where drinkers, and Jesus drank with everyone. Yes some people have problems with Alcohol, but I still can not find the verse in the bible that says don’t get drunk. It does say to not be a drunkard. “Back in the day (Jesus’s day)” a drunkard was a “town drunk” we all know them. That is different then getting drunk once in a while with some close friends and chatting about God, Life, Politics, and all the good stuff. It would seem to me your perception of drinking is off not my perception of communion. Just because you drink doesn’t mean your hanging around singles clubs and strip bars.

Please show the scripture where I am wrong about this.

  9. Anna: That is a good scripture and words to live by. This is more about being happy in the spirit.

But not enough to base a complete no drinking doctrine on. Jesus was the unblemished lamb. He could not sin. So it CAN NOT be a sin to drink knowing that not only did Jesus drink, he turned water into wine so others could drink.

    Cheers :)
