Mars Hill Church gets the City Church cooties

Posted on December 11th, 2007 by catalyst into the City Boobie Church category

I guess all this bad church financing is contagious.

According to West Seattle Blog, Mars Hill Church recently had this to say in one of their "Pastor Prayers".

Multiple pastors request prayers for our financial state. With the deep deficit, it is a test for all the staff to choose Jesus over anxiety when ministry funds are cut short and the possibility of lay-offs and additional budget cuts is on the horizon. Please pray for repentance by those who are disobeying God in their giving

    OK,

I just got the letter from CBC sent out to all PBC Alumni requesting $1000 to pay for the boiler that broke under dorm 2. It says they need $80k, which sounds right, but here is going to be the problem: The last capital campaign CBC did was to raise money to rehab the campus, start a west campus, retire the debt, and do evangelism (Forward Together). Since the CBC leadership lied as to what they were using the money for (they are more in debt now than ever and the east campus still looks like shizz), they are going to have to overcome a serious credibility issue. And since Ken Malmin was demoted, and Larry Asplund, Linda Asplund, Eugene Greco, Joy Greco, Joel and Alyn Shinness, Larry Henderson, Mary Henderson, Larry Taylor, Ken Ross, and Jan Weinstein were all either fired or driven away from PBC, why in the he__ do you think any of us alumni would give CBC a red cent? They fired all our favorite teachers and replaced them with Gen pastors that can’t even show up to class on time. By the way, if CBC receives more than 80k for the boiler, will they return the rest of the money? Puh-leease. As an alumnus of PBC I would love to contribute to a college I have such fond memories of for whatever need they have of. The problem is, that college that I attended no longer exists.

Sola fide—- Man.. that is TACKY.. to beg 1000 bucks from you all, and no less the end of the year. So that would mean they sent it to 80 people? Surely there are more than 80 PBC alumni!!!

I vote that the CBC staff with the 8 highest incomes… THEY each give back 10,000 of their generous salaries to pay for it.

What did Ken get demoted from and to, and who replaced him?

That’s what I’m saying. (about giving out of their own incomes). When I was a member and cell leader at CBC I wasn’t allowed to do anything that involved actual ministry. Pray for people at church? No. Baptize people I had led to the Lord? No. Say two words in the mic at Gen Church. No. I was told, in not so many words to stay in my pew and tithe. But now they want my money. Dear Pastor Frank. Start letting the lay people get involved in actual ministry, instead of always deferring to your click of 10 business people that are mostly a-holes anyway. The real Pastors of CBC left years ago: Bob Isabel, Joel Hejerskstead (sp?), the Knox’s, B. MacGregor. They should have had alarms going off left, right and center when those who were actually pastoring people started walking out. Instead they started begging for money. Listen, I think I need prayer for bitterness so I hope all of you pray for me. It just pissed me off so bad to go to CBC I finally quit and have become a better person and Christian because of it.

Oh Ken was demoted from Dean of the college to something lower. I’m not sure what. Frank D. took over as the dean, and that’s when the “house was cleaned” so to speak at PBC. I’ll be honest. If I had gotten the letter directly directly from Ken Malmin or Lanny Hubbard, then the check would have been in the mail yesterday, because God knows I can afford it.

They changed Ken’s position from Dean of College to Academic Dean.
    Indy!

I attended PBC back in 1972. Should I feel obligated to send Frank $1000.
Wonder what Dear Abby would say!

About seven years ago frank became selfappointed to the CBS Principle position. He wanted all to know that “he’s the man.”
He fell flat on his face with that one. He just kind’a faded away from that scene without any ado. All he managed to accomplish was an ego boost and a lot of negative PR.
I’m sure we will have the same scenerio here. (gloom and despair–sad )

Maybe all of you alumni should get together and instead of sending them money, each one send them an account like the one here that details the screwing you received while attending there. Then maybe you could ask them to send you each some money for your broken lives when you finally reached the boiling (boiler) point and got the hell out of there!

Can’t these pastors come up with anything new? The same thing happens down here. Larry Dublanco did the same thing a few years back when he needed money for his furnace fund. I think everyone in town got a letter.

Right, like the few who don’t tithe or only tithe when they are able are responsible for the huge deficit in this Mars Hill Church. *rolls eyes*

A fellow came up to the preacher and said “That was a damn good sermon you preached this morning!”

The preacher replied, “I appreciate your compliment but I will not tolerate your language!”

“Yes sir,” the fellow went on, “it was such a damn good sermon that I put a hundred dollars in the collection plate.”

“The hell you did” said the preacher.

hey, this is me using my real name. Just want to correct a comment from soli etc. Both Dave and I at one time taught at PBC. It was a fabulous time in our lives, but I want to clarify a misperception. We were not fired or driven away. We received an unsolicited offer here in Canada that we accepted with Pastor Frank’s blessing, which he gave reluctantly because he would have liked for us to stay. We are happier than we have ever been in our lives because we are where God led us, and we have a great attitude. Lighten up everyone…..

    Hi Alynne!

I think people just get upset because they MISS you :)
Your whole family is beloved — at least by me they are. Your kids have made me laugh harder than most people I know and I have the best memories of them and of Dave as a choir teacher.

    Food stamps.

Juuust kidding. I don’t think anyone here has any problem with people giving money to a church, the general sentiment you’ll find around here is that most of us don’t think that it’s right nor proper for a church to demand that you give them 10-plus% (pre-tax) of your hard-earned money. It’d be one thing if they were using it to feed the poor or generally help out less fortunate people, but that money goes into paying for a bunch of superfluous stuff.

Churches should definitely support their pastors financially. The problem with those mega churches is they bring in so much money from the tithe, some of those pastors are taking home up to two hundred thousand in salary. Some of them also have their own ministries, sell books, ect. Bascially, we all fund frivolous stuff like vacation homes, mansions… you can’t group everybody together though since I’m sure some of them do give up their salaries from the church. Joel Osteen is one of them I believe. Some of these pastors also do not have the best moral code or do not follow the Bible to the letter. We are all human and make mistakes, but a few of these pastors have contined to stand in front of their churches as pastor after divorcing and marrying again, some of them two, three times.

Guess they are not hurting too much…..

    A church spreads its wings
Mars Hill feeds more souls at new branch in Bellevue

Just when you thought an attendance the size of Duvall might be enough for Mars Hill Church, the mammoth Seattle chain has calved again, this time in Bellevue, where nearly 1,000 people showed up for Sunday services last week.

With an attendance reaching 7,000 people, the church has been phenomenal in attracting legions of young followers, with its mix of biblical austerity and rock vibe. It now has six branches, with plans to open a seventh in Olympia later this summer.

That growth has run counter to the fading attendance of many mainline churches and occurred despite perennial complaints of sexism against Mars Hill. The nondenominational church bars women from becoming pastors or top leaders, and its founding pastor, Mark Driscoll, has stoked ire with his blog postings about “chickified dudes with limp wrists” and the role of wives.
