Mea Culpa
Posted on January 18th, 2008 by catalyst into the About Us categoryI think I may have been too harsh with Joyce Meyer. I confused her with another pastor, and I have made claims that turned out not to be true. She has never spoke at City Bible Church, which I claimed in a comment. And she has released a certain level of financial accountability on her website.
So from here on, I promise to withhold judgement, until all the facts come in.
Currently, Joyce has complied fully with Senator Grassley's investigation.
Here is an excerpt from a recent article in World Magazine:
Joyce Meyer Ministries, stung by journalists' questions, has made positive changes, including greater financial disclosure. The ministry did not completely avoid Grassley's scrutiny, but it was able to respond quickly to his request for information.
In my rush to criticize, I jumped the gun with Joyce Meyer. I should have done more due diligence. I apologize.

Yeah, I’m sorry too. Further research shows the Joyce Meyer has turned over financial records to the senator. They juggled some numbers before they did, but confessed that it was because they recorded them incorrectly in the first place. They said the commode didn’t cost 23k even though they had initially reported it had. I’m willing to give them that. Here is something else that is interesting though:
For 2002 and 2003, the board approved $900,000 annual salaries for Ms. Meyer
and $450,000 for her husband as well as the use of a $2 million home where all
the bills are paid by the ministry. The ministry also has paid $1.475 million
for three houses for Ms. Meyer’s children.
The ministry didn’t volunteer those figures; they came from filings in the tax
assessment case. But Ms. Meyer doesn’t hide the fact that she does very well.
“I’m living now in my reward,” she told an audience in 2003.
I think that our premise of her living well is substantiated though. You can read more at: http://www.trinityfi.org/press/JoyceMeyer7.html

Joyce Meyer is not who we think she is. We can criticize self-help books that are self-centered. But I read one of Joyce Meyer’s self-help book and it inspired me and helped me grow closer to God. She is sincere, honest and not at all pretentious from what I have read. Her book helped me focus on God and seeing my emotional baggage from God’s perspective.
If u want to talk about pretentious self-help books try Dutch Sheet’s “Intercessory Prayer” I wasted $30 on that book. The book was not at all biblical based, about getting power by using the Holy Spirit to your own purposes. After the 2nd chapter i couldnt read the book anymore. He actually made fun of “other” Christians who dont speak in tongues. There was so much arrogance. And on top of it, Dutch Sheets cant even put a grammatically coherent sentence together. The book was poorly written.
