Sorry for the lack of posts. I have been traveling for work this past week, and airports aren't really condusive to blogging. Airports really only motivate me to drink and eat Mcdonalds. I usually gain about 10 pounds when I fly. To be completely honest, on my way to the airport, I had every intention of reading a book and eating a salad. And then Airport security stole my toothpaste, and I seriously lost it. And subsequently, muttered angrily to myself all the way to the bar.
But I digress…. last night I watched Real Time with Bill Maher and during his New Rules Segment he made the following statement where he compared the Catholic Church to the recently raided Polygamist Cult in Texas.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Bill, you can't be saying that the Catholic Church is no better than this creepy Texas cult! For one thing, altar boys can't even get pregnant."
But, really, what tripped up the "little cult on the prairie" was that they only abused hundreds of kids, not thousands all over the world. Cults get raided. Religions get parades. How does the Catholic Church get away with all of their buggery? VOLUME, VOLUME, VOLUME!
If you have a few hundred followers and you let some of them molest children, they call you a cult leader. If you have a billion, they call you "Pope."
It's like if you can't pay your mortgage, you're a deadbeat, but if you can't pay a million mortgages, you're Bear Stearns, and we bail you out. And that's who the Catholic Church is, the Bear Stearns of organized pedophilia. Too big to fail.
Gotta say, I really agree with him. This is why I distinguish between Faith and Religion. Faith can motivate, inspire and sustain a person through tough times. Religion is most often used as a tool to abuse the vulnerable.
(For another excellent take: Read David's post on the Catholic Church's Sex Abuse Scandal)
If interested, read my previous post on this blog, “Deliver Us From Evil” (DVD) – Lies, Deceptions & Cover-ups in the Catholic Church’s Sex Abuse Scandal.
This is a shocking DVD available at some local video stores (we obtained a copy at Hollywood Video but could not find one at Blockbusters) that is a MUST SEE for all Catholics who blindly follow the Pope…Recommend it to all of your Catholic friends; I have a priest who tells me he will look it up!
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I’m willing to bet that just as many people (if not more, percentage wise) have been emotionally screwed up by the Protestant Church as the Catholic Church simply because of the philosophy that places pastor as the mouthpiece of God. And how many others live heavily restricted lives? Double lives? What about the Islamo-fascists? How much blood is on their hands? It seems any human being trying to lead a whole religion of people is going to cause problems.
Yes, pedophilia is utterly repulsive, but there are other things that reap the same results yet go mostly unnoticed because they’re not as horrifically grotesque as pedophilia, homosexuality, beastiality, etc. I feel terrible for those kids and it really sucks that they’re going to have to carry that around with them for the rest of their lives, but let’s not single out the Catholic Church as the root of all evil. Maybe I’m mistaken, but I thought we had already had a vote and determined MFI to be the root of all evil anyways. And we can’t have two.
AMEN! I have been preaching this for years. I went to Catholic grade school and high school. I have always argued that Catholicism is not Christianity of the bible. It’s like Islam or Mormonism….they pulled out the parts they liked, added their own beliefs, mixed in a couple of brainwashing methods, and forced it on people to believe in through the use of fear and mind control. And today you have millions all over the world searching for something to bring meaning to their life and the find institutionalized religion as a way to provide hope. Beyond the DVD David talks about there are some really good books that bring up the point about the cult of Catholicism. Some good reads for anyone who is interested.
Hey ex-City Bible Slave, if I can get you to give as much energy on our tax exempt status for the plant here in LA as you do this blog, I think we possibly could make a greater dent in this amazing city, how about it? LOL!!!
I completely agree with Bill Maher on this. Of course, the Catholic church has been a cult forever, long before the sexual abuse scandals were revealed. Ex-CB Slave, I know what you’re saying! I went to Catholic middle school, plus I was raised Lutheran (Catholic-light).
The core tenets of Catholicism are not Biblical. Of course, there are true believers in Catholic churches. Most denominations contain redeemed individual people. I understand the broad appeal of Catholicism because it caters to the flesh, which wants our salvation or damnation to be based on our own behavior rather than Christ’s finished work on the Cross!
City Bible molested my mind!
