I Kissed a Girl

Posted on August 4th, 2008 by catalyst into the Uncategorized, Christian Pop Culture category

So you know that song by Katy Perry that you can't get out of your head. The song that is played everywhere and you secretly like it, but you can't admit you like it or all your annoying friends won't think your cool.

You know the song with the lyrics:

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it

Yeah uh, turns out Ms. Perry's real name is Katheryn Hudson. And before singing pseudo-lesbian rock, she was a Christian musician , and her parents are pastors.

And a couple of quick thoughts here:

1) Christian music is like most everything else that's Christian in America; it's about money. So no real surprise, here.

2) TOUCH NOT THY ANNOINTED!

If this is how a Christian musician wants to lead people to Christ, then who are we to judge. She's using her good looks and ambiguous sexuality to reach men all over the world. Men who might not find Christ any other way. It's Missionary Dating on a global scale. And she is reaching millions of people with her message of female sexual experimentation.

So all you haters, just need to get a life, and let our girl Katy work her magic for the Lord. Stop being bitter and get a real hobby.  She's ministering to the lost. What are you doing?

Uh, because…what if the lyrics were…

    I boyn’k a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I boyn’k a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it

…this would imply sin. You are to be forgiven and sin no more…but that does not mean we are to endorse sin. Thats like saying Ted Haggard is ok for doing what he did, because he’s reaching the lost.

You know, I thought what I wrote was kind of funny, but clearly I missed the mark. Since the responses have been: Why aren’t you married? You’re gay. You’re not getting laid. And girls kissing girls is a sin.

I’m gonna have to re-work this idea.

Oh and I’m working on a post in my mind, where I compare City Bible Church to the deep south. The pressure to get married young at that church is ridiculous. And I don’t get it.

I thought it was funny…and totally got what you were saying…but I knew it wouldn’t go over all that well.

    Even with this audience.

(i have also spent the last few days singing the damn song…i can’t get it out of my head. Also, it sounds a lot less perverse when i sing it…until I get to the “hope my boyfriend don’t mind it” part…nevermind…)

Yeah, I’m not sure why people have been downing you so much either. I thought it was funny and actually like that song. Oh well, to each is own.

Hey, I like the CBC deep south idea. I can’t really say much because I got married at 20 to a CBC princess so I guess I was part of the problem (he he). To my defense though, we had left the place by the time we tied the knot and we waited 8 years to have a child. And I definitely don’t recommend that anyone get married before the age of 25 unless you are prepared for a lot of extra work in your life.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with getting married young, if that’s what you want. I just don’t like the church pressuring people to get married as soon as they graduate high school. And especially the pressure on young men, who should really be spending that time figuring out what they want in a career. Not trying to cater to a demanding wife and children. But whatever, to each his own.

On this I couldn’t agree with you more. One of my biggest regrets is not chasing my dreams sooner then I did. I didn’t leave Portland until I was 24. I wish I would have left at 18. I totally feel like I am 5 years behind where I want to be in life right now.

I was flipping channels the other day and saw the young girl who won the first America’s Got Talent. Then I realized that she was on TBN. So, be ready for her crazy, freaky “I kissed a girl”, “You’re so gay” album in a few years. Getting paraded around the super christian scene at 16 can’t be good for you.

wasn’t the review about katy hudson not katy perry? or is that supposed to be the same person? i kinda skimmed the review, must need to read it more carefully. Or are you just being sarcastic and the two names are two different people? Just wondering, i like that song alot too.

Cat, you can look at this two ways. Either you’re a terrible comedian, or you are too clever for your audience. It’s all a matter of perspective.

I actually agree with fred, the superchristian scene isnt healthy for anyone. Katy is also another person just like us. Marilyn Manson and others also grew up in Christian homes. I heard that Marilyn Manson was raised in a strict Southern Baptist home. Gwen Steffani had catholic parents. I never grew up in a Christian home or exposed to the ’superchristian’ scene. I can only imagine. I think its an unhealthy atmostphere.

    Responding to a sidetrack…

I don’t think pressure for figuring our your career and calling is just a Christian or CBC thing. Even in the secular world, its there for young adults. Its a part of life that we cant avoid and as Christians we also live in the world.

The only difference is that with Christians there is the idea of “calling” that seems to be taken out of context. Its hard but follow your dreams and do what you like to do, pray, seek God and let the Holy Spirit guide you.

And it isn’t much different for young women either. This aint the 1920’s where education for women werent a priority and where we were expected to be housewives. There was pressure for me and my friends to get into college and have an impressive career/calling.
