Focus on the Family cuts 202 Jobs
Posted on November 18th, 2008 by catalyst into the Uncategorized category
Focus on the Family is cutting 202 jobs, their largest layoffs ever.
I grew up reading FOF's magazines and really admiring James Dobson. However, over the last couple of years, I've grown to dislike the man. His constant gay-bashing and obsession with the Republican Party really turned me off. He is a clown, charading as a Doctor.
This organization needs to reinvent itself, as it is fast becoming irrelevant.

That’s a nasty comment

I hear you Cat! I’ve grown weary of this “brand” of Christianity that truly feels it’s their calling to save “Western Civilization”! This is what the Dobsonites and the morally Religious Right have turned into. There was an article handed to me in my community group this past Sunday from Reformer via Reformed Pope written by Michael S. Horton (good read called “BEYOND CULTURE WARS”):
“Fundamentalist have always been hostile to the outside world, but now they are highly politicized. Their anti-worldly stance which was once kept within the four walls of the church building is now seen in mass rallies in public places. U.S. Senate chaplain Richard Halverson, an evangelical himself, recently said, ‘All evagelicals care about is their own agenda. They will keep all the phone lines in Washington busy and many of the callers are downright nasty, yet when it comes to hundreds of other issues Congress faces, they never hear from Evangelicals.’ The only time we get involved in education is to protest public education. The only time, it seems, we get involved in the arts is to protest the public funding of obscene art. While pro-life leaders often confuse the issue of abortion with getting little red riding hood taken out of the public libraries.”
So true…so true…

No no no, you’re wrong. That comment wasn’t nasty. Saying you disagree with the lifestyle choices and political agenda of the gay community is nasty.
Personally attacking conservative christians demonstrates that the speaker is tolerant, metropolitian, thinks for himself, loves travelling through Europe, and has an above average IQ.
This can be confusing, but political climate is everything. Yes, this is a bit like living in opposite land. But once you adjust, it all makes perfect sense.

Hahaha! As opposed to the comment you once made about gays in another thread:
“They should stay in the closet where they belong!!!!!!!!!!!”

It’s amazing how they can run as non-profit with over 900 employees and 95% of their income as “donations” to the tune of $128 MILLION last year. That’s like…magic. Dobson has built an empire to champion his religious opinions and gets people to give him money to do it. He doesn’t even claim to be a prophet or heal anybody.
A lot of people are upset about prop 8 failing in California. It’s groups like FoF that are fighting on the opposite side. Money gets things done, and when you have the power of hundreds of millions you have a considerable influence. And FOF is only one group of many. The recent news is full of stories of people blaming the Mormon church which simply got out the vote. To say that a religious minority swung the vote is being naive. Despite the media bias, most people are still not as comfortable with the idea of homosexuality as Hollywood and TV would like us to believe. Doctor Dobson is just leading the charge for a large portion of society that doesn’t believe that they must change or compromise their fundamental beliefs about families simply because it’s the PC thing to do.
I understand your anger, but the guy is no “clown charading as a doctor”. How many doctoral degrees in child development do you have? Even if you don’t agree with his world view, you have to at least recognize that he has a well-informed opinion. If he honestly believes in the view that the Bible sanctions only heterosexual families, in spite of a lifetime of secular education at USC, how can you fault him? It’s not like he’s just making crap up here. Feel free to disagree but calling him a clown is a bit harsh.

Wow, I think DOC went off the scale on the satire & sarcasm scale here. haha

haha… nice. you’re learning, Doc, you’re learning.

I agree 100% Cat. FoF is only relevant with the people who are already in their camp, people who raised their families in the 80s and 90s. They are not converting any new
followerssupporters from my generation, raising their families in the 00s.November 18th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I learn from the best. Thank you.

I know this is not the right post to ask this question and I know that I have in the past argued for the tithe, but I was wondering if anyone could direct me to some really good solid biblical teaching/exposition on the tithe being new covenant or not. Not that I’m abandoning the tithe quite yet, but I want to research it being new covenant or not.

Here are two links to get you started. Obviously, you should do your own research as much as possible, but these two are definitely in the anti-tithing camp.

You don’t have to google very much to find the pro-tithing opinion. However, IMO, most of them simply repeat the same dogma without addressing the points given in the above articles.
You can also look at past debates and discussions here on this blog by looking at the “Tithe” link under “Categories” on the right hand side of this page.

Beltshazzar,
That’s what I found when I googled it…most of the pro-tither’s repeated the same ol’ thing and haven’t addressed the arguments/concerns of the “anti-tithers”. Thanks I appreciate the info.

Jesus said:
In so saying, He clearly attributed the tithe to the law. So when your minister tries to tell you that the tithe pre-dates the law and points to Abraham’s ‘tithe’ to Melchizedek from the ’spoils of war’, you might want to ask your minister if he disagrees with Jesus who attributed the tithe to the law.
