Quick Tithing Question

Reading from Numbers 31

32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, 33 72,000 cattle, 34 61,000 donkeys 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.  36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:
       337,500 sheep,
37 of which the tribute for the LORD was 675;  38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the LORD was 72;  39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the LORD was 61;  40 16,000 people, of which the tribute for the LORD was 32.

Why is the Lord’s tribute less than 10%? Shouldn’t it be a full tithe? Abraham gave 10 percent of his spoils of war to Melchizedech and Pro-Tither’s want to use that to show that the “Tithe” was established before the law. But if it were…wouldn't the Lords share of virgins be 3,200 and not 32?

Any takers?

  1. w-w-w-well y-y-you are j-just wrong about t-t-tithing!

Wouldn’t you love to see the look on the faces of tithing teachers, and hear their empty, stud-d-dering argument?

  2. OK…I’m lousy at math but wouldn’t that make the Lord’s portion .01 percent, or a thousandth (of the ORIGINAL amount, not the half-share)?

    ____________
Lol, thank you for voicing my observation about the .01%.

  4. You are correct that the law couldn’t have been given to Abraham first since Abraham gave a tenth and later we find that God required only 1.1% (do the math correctly) of the war spoils.

Therefore, what Abraham did was NOT brought forward into the Mosaic law and obviously had nothing to do with the law.

  5. Actually while I am not a proponent of tithing either…it seems to be the only command that churches stress from the old testament. What about the laws at it relates to prayer etc. But in regards to this scripture, further down in verses 42-47 it states that the Lord commanded Moses to select 1 out of every 50 persons and animals. In doing this 16000/50 = 320 and 10% of 320 is 32.

  6. Exactly. Which is why Abram cannot be considered to have given a lawful Tithe.

The point of Genesis 14 & Hebrews 7 isn’t to carry the Tithe (all by itself out of 613 laws) into the New Covenant. It was meant to show that even the Levites (who received the Tithe) paid a Tithe to Jesus, which proves that Jesus (of the tribe of Judah), is a Priest, a higher and better Priest than those of Levi.

Yet pro-Tithers twist and distort everything they get their hands on.
