Our prayers have been answered. According to the Willamette Week, Westboro Baptist Church will be in Oregon over Memorial Day weekend. WBC is the church that goes around protesting at the funeral of soldiers and such. They will be protesting at several places in the Portland Area, including City Bible Church. The reasoning I guess is that City Bible Church contains faux Christians. (apparently they just don't hate gay people enough).

Lord knows I have criticized City Bible Church, but if I have to choose between CBC and Westboro Baptist, I'm choosing CBC everytime. City Bible while manipulative and greedy is at least not evil. Those WBC followers are just genuinely bad people. Seriously. Not good human beings.
Anyway, what would be a good sign for a counter protest at City Bible? Something that combines both City Bible and Westboro Baptist. Something along the lines of "God's hates Christians who don't tithe" or "Repent! Your skirt is really tacky." or my personal favorite, but it doesn't really have to do with Westboro Baptist "No Tithe for Oil".
What do you all got?
Here’s another one, in light of the fact that WBC homeschools all their children.
“Homeschoolers are Retarded.
I know.
I am one.”
“Repent! Your skirt is really tacky” has great potential. I threw it in the ole Sign Generator and this is how it will look:

Anyone remember this? several years ago, there was a Christian group or church protesting against CBC because they felt that CBC was not doing enough to be against abortion. CBC is against abortion but they dont hold huge signs of aborted babies. CBC at least supports organizations like Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) which the protestors didnt like. According to these protestors you were a lukewarm Christian if you are holding protest signs and being in-your-face.
I wonder is it’s the same group protesting against CBC and I’m not sure what they have against CBC this time.
But yeah, the CBC counter posts are hilarious. I laughed hard at “Repent! Your skirt is really tacky.”
Actually I went to their protest schedule and this is exactly their reasoning (or lack of) for protesting against CBC.
“City Bible Church 9200 NE Fremont WBC to picket these faux christians who call themselves a Bible Church as they disobey God with every breath. Your pastor is a liar! His wife’s hair is cropped off, showing she is not in subjection to her husband and is in full rebellion against God! READ 1 Co. 11:8-15!! These false prophets teach the soul-damning lies that God loves everyone and Jesus Christ died for everyone when they know the Bible teaches the exact opposite. These are the same lies the Anti-Christ Beast Obama teaches because he hates you and wants you to take his mark of destruction. You want them to lie to you — to prophesy smooth things unto you to make you feel good about your sins. They lie to you because you pay them to, and you love it that way. (Jer. 5:30 – A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; 31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?) You are all going to hell, and that makes us very happy!”
And which god would that be? He sounds really mean.
Speaking of Christianity gone nuts, here is what some preacher thinks should happen if you don’t tithe. Because (as he explains later) tithing is what gets us into heaven and purchases our healing.
I wish I could offer more, but all I can come up with are some lame puns.
I hate puns…but still feel I need to contribute to this thread:
G.U.’s Killed Jesus
or
Jesus Hates GU’s.

Wow. Without giving anything away, I find Westboro Baptist to be… sick. Glad I’ll be out of town. Thanks for the heads up! I’m disturbed. Any particular campus they plan on protesting?
Sorry… didn’t read all the comments before posting that. Any possibility this would turn dangerous? I have friends and people I love there at Rocky Butte.
NSQ, I don’t think it will turn dangerous. They can’t come onto the private property. And the public street access is pretty narrow, so no room for a mob. The most they can do is stand there with their signs and yell at the people driving by. If they block public access, the police will get involved. It will probably be similar to the anti-abortion protest a few years back (as Nina said).
What I don’t get is why on earth they would target CBC when there are so many Episcopal churches, the denominaton which just consecrated a lesbian bishop.
And I’m curious to see what will the CBC brass say to the media in response to the protest? (Since they’ve been so active in their own anti-LGBT stance in the past and all).
Which could make for another good sign:
Don’t picket us…we hate fags too.
WBC’s main reason for protesting is to provoke some entity into restricting their protest and thus violating their first amendment rights. Then, WBC sues that entity and wins a significant amount of money. They do it all the time. And it’s been pretty well established that this is there primary reason for protesting.
I honestly think WBC googled themselves and found that they were recently mentioned on this blog. Read some of the comments that talked about how you could prevent them from picketing and decided to try to bait CBC into forcing them off public property.
Unfortunately for WBC, City Bible is very familiar with protests. And they won’t take the bait. That said, I would be careful if I was CBC. WBC is very litigious, and they look for any reason to sue.
How about this sign:
“God may hate the gays, but even He likes Cam and Mitchell”
I’m no MFI fan, but in CBC’s defense, believing homosexual behavior is a sin and not being pro-gay marriage does not equate “not liking fags”.
Christians may not feel that way, but that is the strong impression it leaves on the world and specifically the gay community. And that doesn’t mean that Christians are “misunderstood” or being persecuted – it means their approach sucks.
Correct. However, it does equate to “not liking gays”.
An openly gay person would likely be more welcome at City Bible than at Westboro Baptist. However, a gay person wouldn’t be welcome at City Bible for long. They would be expected to “pray out the gay”.
The only real difference b/t City Bible and Westboro regarding gay folks is that CBC wouldn’t use the term “fag”. But neither church likes gay people.
Correction:
The only real difference b/t City Bible and Westboro regarding gay folks is that CBC would use the term “fag” IN PUBLIC.
I have unfortunaly heard the term used by a CBC pastor before…but of course this was from the privacy of his own home.

This is exactly what I was thinking. WBC just want’s money. You google CBC and you will find this blog, which talks all about the money that CBC has. Another example of how this blog has a bigger influence than any of us realize.
Along the same lines, why aren’t they paying a visit to Portland City Hall? Is Sam Adams too easy a target?

That totally makes sense. And, actually makes me feel better. Seriously, if it’s all about money, then maybe they don’t really believe what they’re saying. I mean, how angry and sick and obnoxious and paranoid can you get? But I guess they like to hear us say those kinds of things – just compounds their fear.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I honestly think they’re way out of line on this, as far as City Bible goes. There’s truly no reason. And, doesn’t it say something that they would avoid the actual target of their anger and go after businesses and churches and funerals – where what they are saying is actually NOT true?
“I bought this sign in the bookstore.”
Do you think City Bible leaders and church goers will simply think this visit by the notorious WBC is persecution bcz CBibleC is so ‘righteous’? Christians, especially the charasmatic types, think that persecution is a sign they are in God’s will doing the right thing. Like it’s a notch on the belt or something.
Also don’t you think that CBibleC will revel in the attention it brings them? (eye roll)
Wish God Himself had a sign – an obvious one- notating his displeasure in the activities of both churches – something like “I AM not with THEM” or that one he wrote on a wall once: “Ichabod – My Glory Has Departed”
You may have just trumped the “Repent! Your skirt is really tacky” sign.

hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahahaaaa
wow
I don’t know about that group, it’s so extreme it almost seems fake.. but I guess it’s real? … bunch of crazies.
But I did hear that they love to go around and sue people that get in their face. So I still think it’s a scam…
I don’t know if anyone else saw this episode of 20/20 on Friday but wow, talk about shocking. My wife and I were staring at the TV with our jaws on the ground. Suck a sick perversion of who Christ really is. Instead of all of us praying for sinners, I think we need to start praying for believers!
